Back 2 Basics 4 Kids

Too many toys these days minimize family interaction, rather than encourage it. Think about it...how often do you see kids sitting around with head phones on listening to their latest music, staring at a video/TV/computer screen, completely oblivious to just about anything going on around them. Why not give some gifts that bring families together. Back 2 Basics 4 Kids may have just what you are looking for. This company/site has all kinds of wonderful arts, crafts, and activity books with projects for kids that can involve the whole family. Not only that, but they have exceptionally low prices AND outstanding customer service to help you find just what you are looking for (and maybe help you figure out WHAT you ARE looking for :-). So avoid the malls, and head to this web site... http://www.back2basics4kids.com and check out their trains, old fashioned wooden puzzles, beads, arts, crafts, stencils, masks, jump ropes, magnet kits, blocks, idea books, and so much more.

POST IT...in your computer favorites, and wherever you keep your gift cards.

(EDITOR'S TIP: Order a couple of extra items for those unexpected Christmas/birthday party invites.)

One 9/11 Update and Charity

Kip Taylor was one of the many who died at the Pentagon on 9/11. His wife Nancy was 8 months pregnant with their second child, their first was only about 2. He sent an email that day to friends saying, "After kids, there are days that just get going when you say: Hi honey, I'm home! . . .What we do until that moment pales in comparison to what we do after that point in the day." A little more than an hour later, his dreams of fatherhood came to an end. Nancy Taylor ran into Pres. Bush some days later after a memorial service. She wrote that she was very touched that in spite of the huge responsibilities he had on his shoulders in the days following the attack, that he took the time to stop, express his sympathy, give her a hug, and encourage her to take care of herself, esp. for the children. Nancy probably thought that losing Kip was the worst thing her children would have to face in their lives, but the tragedy wasn't over. Six weeks later while Nancy was giving birth to the child Kip would never know, the doctors discovered she had terminal cancer. She didn't waste her time complaining, but I'm sure tried to squeeze the love of a lifetime into her children's lives. She established a charity for infertile military couples, helping to pay their way to the only two military facilities where in vitro fertilizations can be performed. The Kip P. Taylor Memorial Fund helps offset travel, lodging and food for military couples traveling to the hospitals. (Donations to: Kip P. Taylor Fund, PO Box 185, McLean, VA 22101). Nancy passed away and will be lain to rest next to Kip at Arlington National Cemetery this week. So if you are looking for a good holiday, or any day, charity, may I recommend this one. Another charity that would directly benefit the Taylor children and other children of Special Operations personnel killed in action is the Warrior Fund, which provides all expense college educations to these children. As you buy presents for your family this year, don't forget to give to those who have suffered so much. Anti-Fog for Goggles/Masks/Helmets and ???

Do you have trouble with fog? When you put on your sunglasses after a hard workout, do they fog up? Do you have to spend time in a gas mask (military?) that fogs up? Not to mention motorcycle, welder, paintball, or other helmets. Science glass goggles? Or just your regular swim goggles/masks? Swim stores have a liquid that you can drop into these items, spread over the surface, wipe dry, and it will keep things from getting foggy. It does need to be re-treated periodically. The drops are usually very inexpensive. So check out your local swimming or sporting goods store and give it a try.

Magazine Renewal Deals

No matter what magazines you subscribe to, all tend to fall into 2 renewal categories. One group tends to offer the early bird renewal deals, so the first renewal offer you receive will usually be the best and subsequent offers will go up. The other group tends to offer the best deals last, so the renewal offers get lower & lower the closer you get to expiration. There are a very few that remain the same no matter when you do it. Most magazines will fall into the last offer-best offer category, so the first time you come up for renewal, wait as long as you can & check the rates. Once you see the pattern in your magazines, keep a little list with your stamps of which magazines should be renewed when. Also consider taking advantage of the big savings for the longer renewal rates. A couple of magazines that I've checked out...TV Guide usually offers the best rates at the first renewal, Consumer Reports tends to be the same whenever you renew.

Final Words

JOKE

"Norman and his wife live in snow country, high in the northeast. One winter morning while listening to the radio, they hear the announcer say, "We are going to have 8 to 10 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even numbered side of the street, so the snowplow can get through." Norman's wife goes out and moves her car. A week later while they are eating breakfast, the radio announcer says, "We are expecting 10 to 12 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the odd numbered side of the street, so the snowplow can get through." Norman's wife goes out and moves her car again. The next week they are having breakfast again, when the radio announcer says "We are expecting 12 to 14 inches of snow today. You must park..........." then the electric power goes out. Norman's wife is very upset, and with a worried look on her face she says, "Honey, I don't know what to do. Which side of the street do I need to park on so the snowplow can get through?" With all the love and understanding in his voice he could muster, Norman said: "Why don't you just leave it in the garage this time?"
