We sang the praises of her first cookbook ("Semi-Homemade Cooking: Quick, Marvelous Meals and Nothing Is Made from Scratch" ) back in our February 19th, 2003 issue. At the time I said I was already looking forward to her next publication and now it's here. "Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade Desserts" gives us more of all those mouth-watering creations that we never thought we would have time to prepare ourselves. But with her 70% Ready Made Products/30% Fresh, we CAN find the time to do it. When I have shown this book (and her previous one) to others, I always get the same reaction. First, people look at the photo and say, "Oh, that recipe would take too much work." Then I ask them to look at the ingredients and ease of preparation and the next thing you know they want a copy of the book for themselves. Sandra Lee obviously knows that there are a lot of us out here who don't have a lot of spare time to spend in the kitchen, but would still like to make nice things, and even entertain. This cookbook is for real people like us. How about a White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Bark with only 3 ingredients and 10 min prep time, Chocolate Almond Biscotti that uses devil's food cake mix as a base and only 10 min of preparation, or a Sour Cream Philadelphia Cheesecake with Cherries that can be prepared in 10 min & ready to eat in 40 min more. This is just a small sampling of the incredible recipes Ms. Lee has put together. If you'd like to try it for yourself, Ms. Lee has graciously allowed us to reprint her recipe for Frozen English Toffee cake in this issue's recipe section, so be sure to check it out. The cookbook also includes celebrity recipes, recipes for holidays, and even decorating tips. So check it out at... "Semi-Homemade Desserts" "AND TV SHOW!!"--For those of you who are already Sandra Lee fans and get the Food Network channel, check out her new show currently showing at 11am on Sat. and 5:30pm Tue.. Read more on her show (and more recipes) at... http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/show_sh And if all else fails head out to her web site for more great ideas at... http://www.semi-homemade.com/ POST IT...on your shopping list, in your TV Guide, recipe box, computer, and with your friends. * * * * * * * Ultimate Baby Name Web SiteHave you ever noticed that after a hurricane (or major snow storm) shuts down a city, that about 9 months later the area has a baby boom? ;-) So for all of you expecting an "Isabel" baby, here's the best web site I have ever come across for baby names. You can look them up by gender, most popular names, celebrity names, soap opera names, even Tolkien names (for you "Lord of the Rings" fans). But one of the site's neatest features is to look names up by nationality, for those who would like to get into their family's heritage. You can also look them up in the usual way, alphabetically. Here is the site address... http://www.babynames.com/V5/index.php?content=n_search
POST IT...on your computer and forward to all your friends who might be expecting. Maybe give the web site in a baby shower invite and have each guest come with a certain number of suggestions, either serious or humorous. :-) * * * * * * * Medicines in SchoolsWhen my oldest started at a public high school this year, after being homeschooled all his life, we obviously had to make some adjustments. One of those adjustments was in trying to prevent viruses from getting a foothold. At home, when we start feeling something coming on, we are big fans of extra vitamin C, Echinacea, and zinc lozenges. But with the school rules about "medicinal products" we couldn't send them in with him without it being a major production involving school nurses, passes to the nurse's office, and sometimes being late to class because of it. But when I checked with our school they said that kids WERE allowed to have cough drop/lozenge type products as long as they didn't give them to anyone else, and kept them in their bag before using on their own. So I was able to send my child in with cough drops, zinc lozenges, and even lozenges that had Echinacea and extra C. So if you are in the same boat, esp. with flu season coming, then check the policy at your school and with your doctor. And remember, if at all possible, keep those contagious at home; it may be just a cold or mild flu to you, but to someone in poor health it could be life-threatening. POST IT...with your cold/flu meds. * * * * * * * Reporting "Do Not Call" ViolationsFor those of you who got your name on the National Do Not Call List by August 31st, and receive any telemarketing calls after that, here is the way to complain. If you have web site access, you can go to...
https://www.donotcall.gov/Complain/ComplainCheck.aspx And do it all online. If you do not have web site access you can report it by calling 1-888-382-1222. Remember the call is not against the rules if it is a poll, from a charity, political organization, or companies that you already have a relationship with (you've bought from them before). You will need to know the name of the company and/or their phone number. If they start out with a poll, but then try to sell you something, THAT is still breaking the rules. POST IT...near your phone. * * * * * * * Recipe: Semi-Homemade's Frozen English Toffee CakeServes 12 to 16
