Cyber Hymnal

Go to http://www.cyberhymnal.org  for the most comprehensive site on hymns I have ever seen. You can listen to the music, read the lyrics or the history of the hymn/composers, even find which hymns are connected to particular Bible verses. This is a good one for any lover of hymns.

POST IT...in your favorites folder, write in the front of your personal hymn book if you have one, and pass on to your church's music director/musicians/pastor.

No More Ipecac?

According to recent news articles, the FDA is trying to decide whether or not to require a prescription for Ipecac. Ipecac has been used for many years to induce vomiting mostly in children with certain cases of poisoning. I used it many years ago when my non-salad mushroom eating toddler son decided to try a "wild" variety. This is a very controversial issue. Even the FDA advisory board's vote was 6-4. Some medical groups believe that it isn't worth having on hand unless you are far from a hospital, because it only removes about 30% of the targeted poison, and can have occasional negative side effects. They are also concerned with the use of Ipecac by bulimics (eating disorder where people make themselves vomit to avoid calories). But some poison control centers and physicians still recommend having it on hand. Just be aware that after the first of the year, it may not be available over the counter any longer. So be sure to check with your pediatrician and see what they recommend. Some people also like to have some on hand for pets. REMEMBER!!-NEVER USE IPECAC UNLESS A PHYSICIAN OR POISON CONTROL CENTER ADVISES IT FOR YOUR PARTICULAR CASE...with some poisons Ipecac should NOT be used.

POST IT...near your pediatrician/vet's phone number.

Computer Photos without the Digital Camera

You don't have to have a digital camera to get a computer disk of photos. If you have the Advantix System or 35mm cameras, you can get your photos on a disk. It stores easily, and makes it easier to send photos to family and friends who have computers. But you can still get regular photos from the same roll. Ask your photo developer about it.

POST IT...with your camera/film.

FAX/Copier/Scanner...Worth the $$?

With Christmas coming and people needing ideas for gifts, take a look at whether a FAX, Copier, or Scanner might be worth the money. I found myself spending a lot of time running out to the copier store (I think most homeschoolers can relate), until my husband bought me a little table top copier and I wouldn't take it back for anything now. He bought me a FAX machine when we were working on mortgage paper work and every time I turned around the mortgage company needed something else Faxed right away. Now I've found that if I FAX my insurance claims in, they are paid much faster than when I mail them in. I don't use our scanner as much as the other two machines, but if you find that you are running in and out to a store to have things scanned, consider getting a machine. They have single machines that will do all three things now, as long as you don't need to copy anything bulky. So take a look at how much time and money you spend running out for copies, Faxes or Scans. Look at how many times you have had to run out at the last minute because something came up & you didn't have any of these machines. If you do it often enough then remember, as my husband likes to say, "your time is worth something too."

POST IT...on Christmas wish lists, or in the yellow pages under "Copy Service"?

Recipe: Easy Baked Chicken & Rice

Preheat oven to 350F. Take a 9x13 pan and grease well. Pour in 1C raw rice (if using "instant" rice increase to 1 3/4C), 1 envelope onion soup mix, and a little chopped/dried parsley if desired, and stir well. Add in 1 can cream of chicken OR cream of mushroom soup, 1 3/4C water, and 1 small can sliced mushrooms. Mix all together well. Take whole chicken pieces (legs, breasts, wings, etc), rinse and place on top of the mixture in the pan. Press down so that as much of the chicken is covered with liquid as possible. Sprinkle lightly with paprika and/or garlic powder if desired. Cover with a lid or foil and place in center of oven. Cook for 1/2 hour, then remove lid and cook for another hour. Serves 4-6 depending on how much chicken you use.

Back Issue Treasure: May 18th, 1997

Now we'll highlight an issue from our first year. You can go to this back issue to find out how to contact or form a MOPS (Mothers Of PreSchoolers) group in your area. Did you know that Alarm Decals can help, even if you don't have an alarm on your house or car? Looking for more natural pest control...we offer our ideas in this issue as well. You've seen the expensive sprays recently advertised on TV for odor control in shoes, but this issue has an idea that won't cost you a cent. Do you have kids that leave the caps off markers (teachers, are you reading?)...don't throw them away, we tell you how to recharge them. We also have an idea of the ultimate gift of a Memory Book for someone special in your life, and haven't known a person who could receive one yet without tears coming to their eyes. All this, plus ideas to make the best use of your time, all in this back issue.

Final Words

JOKE (Thanks to Uncle Wayman for this one)

Two young female students at a high school enjoyed putting lipstick on and then "kissing" the mirrors in the school bathrooms. They had been talked to about it, but continued to "leave their marks." Finally the principal called the girls to the bathroom along with the janitor. He said to the janitor, "Show them how you clean the mirrors." The janitor took the sponge side of his squeegee dipped it into the nearest toilet, rubbed the mirror with it, & then squeegeed it down. Not surprisingly, there were no further incidents of "kisses" on the mirror.
