Homemade Water Slide

Looking for a last gasp of summertime fun? Our neighbor started our kids on this inexpensive alternative to water parks (most of which closed last weekend), and all you need is some plastic & a little hill. Hit your local hardware store for a long roll of plastic sheeting; depending on your yard you might need 2 rolls. Spread out on the nearest little hill to your home, anchor top corners with something heavy or have the kids take turns standing on them. Make sure to check for rocks or any other hard items before you put the plastic down under it. Use your hose to water down the slide, then keep a steady flow going near the top. Let the kids slide down on their bellies, backs, or sitting down. Do NOT let them walk on the slide as it is very slippery. When this slide was set up in our backyard, all the neighborhood kids showed up to enjoy it. Be sure to supervise them well, just to play it safe. I think the kids had more fun with this do-it-yourself toy, than waiting in line at the water parks. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work too well on flat areas.

POST IT...on your calendar's summer months.

Clean Films Rentals

In a past issue we had done a story on Family Flix, a company that sells movies that have had the bad stuff edited out. While some people enjoy amassing a video library, there are others who just want to rent movies. So if you like the idea of edited movies, but want to rent, not buy, here's the company for you. Clean Films does everything by internet and mail. It is the same set up as NetFlix, for those familiar with that program, except all of these movies have been edited to come out a little better than a PG. All you have to do is go to their web site at http://www.cleanfilms.com and select all the movies that you would like to rent. You can move them up or down in the list if desired. They mail you the first available DVD on your list along with a postage paid envelope to mail it back when you are done with it. You can keep it as long as you want, but are only allowed to have so many out at a time, depending on which payment plan you choose. It is a single monthly fee no matter how many movies you rent, but the pricing plan determines how many you can have out at a time. If the DVD you receive is damaged, then you just send it back, no problem. They have a pretty big selection and add about 3-7 new titles every week. You can try this service risk free, with their 1 month free trial. In that time, you can rent as many movies as you want, but can only have one out at a time. If you like the service and sign up, they also offer a 50% discount if 3 of your friends sign up for the 1 month free trial. If 3 of your friends sign up for the actual service after the trial, then you can get a free year with your plan. And as good as this service is, I don't think that you'll have a problem spreading the word. No running to the video store, no late fees, and no "bad stuff" in the movies...what a great deal.

Avoiding Web Face

It's that time of the year, for many of our readers, when spiders seem to get particularly active. It's no fun walking into an unexpected web and getting the dreaded..."web face." It can be a health concern as well, since some areas have poisonous spiders. To help avoid this problem, take a spider repellent and spray a fine mist over & around outside light fixtures, doors, and windows where spiders seem to be a problem. Be sure the lights have been off for a while when you do this. Re-treat when you notice them showing up again, but it should work for a good amount of time, depending on the weather.

POST IT...on your calendar under "September."
