Vet Meds Match

Probably everyone has seen them at one time or another, those ads for pet medications to order by 800 line or online. But most vets that I have talked to will not give you a prescription to go somewhere else. HOWEVER, most vets now are trying to be competitive and if you ASK, they will often agree to match the online price WITH shipping included. Usually they just ask that you bring in some kind of print-out with price & shipping shown. Here is a good site that tries to find you the lowest prices around. Depending on your vet, this can save you as much as 50%. Check out this site... http://www.destinationrx.com/petprescriptions/

POST IT...with your pet's shot record, on the calendar on the date of their next appt, and under your vet's name in the yellow pages.

Scrabble Site

Are you a Scrabble fan, but tired of thumbing through that dictionary? Or maybe you KNOW your word IS a word, but your outdated dictionary doesn't have it? Your troubles are over. Go to this site... http://www.hasbroscrabble.com/home.cfm  for your online Scrabble dictionary. Just type in the word and if it IS a word, then it will pop up with a dictionary entry. So go spell those words! It is also a good site for learning new words to use in that NEXT Scrabble game (are you listening Lowell? :-). Oh, and by the way, "cee" is a word. :-)

POST IT...inside your Scrabble box, and on your computer.

New Henty Tape Site & Contest

Previously we had done a story on some great audio recordings of UNABRIDGED Henty books (see back issue below). Henty wrote amazingly accurate historical fiction covering periods from 1250BC to the Victorian Era. Well, now Jim Hodges Productions has made it even easier to check out these great books on tape. Go to... http://www.hentybooksontape.com  You can read a little Henty bio, and if you click on the "Order" buttons the list of tapes available will show up. By way of introduction to the site, they have kindly offered a contest just for Make a Note readers and friends. Here's how it works, find the 'Contact us' button on their site and send an e-mail to them with "Make-A Note" in the subject line. They will ask you to tell them why you think you should win a free tape set. Then they will select the most 'worthy' recipient. These are wonderful tapes (11-13 hours long) for those long vacation car trips, and the shipping is included. So check them out & don't miss out.

POST IT...on your computer, and in your Henty guide.

Easier Credit Bureau Check

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts officials announced today a special opportunity to honor America's servicemen and women. Recipe: Bag 'Em

Okay, this isn't really a recipe, but a way to corral all those new recipes you keep cutting out. If you are the way I used to be, I would cut out a recipe that sounded good and stick it in my recipe box under the appropriate heading. But whenever I was going through my recipes, I tended to go for the old standards & just ended up with a box overflowing with recipes I would hardly ever use. Until I came up with an easier way to organize all those little slips of paper. First, go through your recipe box and if you come across a recipe that you have never used, pull it out, and truly evaluate whether you would ever really use it (you should do this with any recipe you cut out). If you have a very small fridge, then the recipe calling for 3 kinds of prepared Jell-O would probably not be a popular one. If, like me, you avoid recipes that require multiple bowls to prepare, then throw it out. Now, once you get your stack of untried recipes and put your box back in the cupboard with the old standards, we are ready to start something new. Purchase a box of quart size Ziploc bags and pull ONE out for the use of our project (you can use a file or folder, but I've found the recipes tend to fall out all over the place). Take regular sheets of notebook or typing paper for however many categories you want to break the recipes down into. May I suggest: Breakfast/Breads, Appetizers/Soups/Salads, Main Dishes, Sides, Desserts, & Gifts in that order. Fold each sheet of paper LENGTH-wise and write one of the categories at the top of each sheet. Then spread them out on a table or counter. Take your pile of untried recipes and put them on the appropriate sheet. Then take the sheets & place in the Ziploc bag (the top will stick out a bit) with all the recipes in that category behind it. Continue placing all the divider sheets & recipes in the same way. Now the next time you prepare your shopping list, take down your "'New' Bag" and pull out at least one new recipe to try each week. The bag will fit nicely on the shelf with your cookbooks now. If the recipe is a hit, then put it into your old standards recipe box. If it isn't a good one for you, then throw it out.

POST IT...in your recipe box.

Back Issue Treasure: November 6th, 2002

We didn't go too far back on this issue, but when everyone is getting ready to travel it never hurts to point someone in the direction of tips to make traveling easier on the whole family. Not to mention those great Henty books on tape we spoke of above to help the kids pass the time. Staying home, but want to make it a special night? Try making the Easy Strawberry Cake and it will go in that "old standard" recipe box fast. :-) We also talk about the fun of Do it Yourself Pottery Shops and recommend some excellent Natural Healthcare Books.

Final Words

JOKE

Did you hear about the guy whose favorite sweatshirt was dirty? He decided to wash it himself. Seconds after he stepped into the laundry room, he shouted to his wife,''Honey, what setting do I use on the washing machine?'' ''"It depends,'' she replied, ''What does it say on the shirt?'' ''Carolina,'' he yelled back.
