First, thanks to our reader, Michel A., who let us know that the *57 Trace works in Canada as well as the states. Dot, another reader, had concerns about our flea trap with the soapy water & the light, as to whether pets would drink the water & whether the light would be safe by the water. All, I can say is that our dog wasn't interested in the water, but if your pet was, then you could close the door to that room when the "trap" is in place. As far as light safety, I would expect that people would use common sense & be as safe as possible with electric lights and water. We actually just plugged a nightlight into the wall & placed the water on the floor under the light. I've known other people who used flashlights. I wouldn't use a lamp on carpet because of the lack of stability. And finally, the GREAT news, on the missing children. Lorrie & Lorna wrote that they couldn't find any listing for the missing children we had featured in the last issue. Since the NCMEC had changed their site format, I thought that was the problem. But how wonderful to find out that the last *7* children we have featured have all been found and were taken off the missing children web site. So hopefully that answers all the questions connected with our last issue. POST IT...near your computer to check against the last issue. * * * * * * * "What Should You Do?"Having taught self-defense courses to women & children, I can tell you that one of the most important things you can do is to have a plan AHEAD of time. This new TV show, with its companion web site, helps you to do just that. "What Should You Do?" airs on the Lifetime channel on Monday nights at 8pm ET/PT, but even if you don't get the channel, you can still go to the web site to get ideas on how various emergencies should be handled. Each episode features about 4-5 situations, with the real people who went through them and survived. Then an expert will discuss what happened & also how things might be handled even better. Past situations discussed have included dog attacks, gas explosions, hostage crisis, being lost in the wilderness, and criminal attacks. The stories (so far) have been done in a non-sensational manner, and in most cases would be fine for the whole family (except perhaps for very young children) to watch. As always children, should be told that the odds are not great that anything would ever happen to them, but that it is good to be prepared, like wearing your seat belts just in case. To check out their web site go to... http://www.lifetimetv.com/shows/wsyd/index.html Be sure to check out the "More Tips" section which has all the situations featured in previous shows. POST IT...in your TV Guide and on your computer "Favorites" list. * * * * * * * Post Office Food DriveIn the USA, the 2nd Saturday in May is the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) annual Food Drive. In most cities across the USA on this day, you can place canned goods in your mailbox and put the flag up. They will collect the cans as they deliver the mail and pass them on to local food banks and shelters. You can also do this with the keyed mailboxes that most apts/townhouses have (you just might have to buy some smaller cans:-). You don't even have to make a special trip to the store; most of us have some extra cans of food or something we bought by mistake just sitting in our cupboards. Be sure to check with your local post office to make sure they are participating. You can find the listings in the blue United States government pages in your phone book. For more information go to... http://www.nalc.org/news/release/fddrfact.html POST IT...on your calendar, on your shopping list, and by your phone (to call to confirm participation). * * * * * * * Catch the WAVE (Petunias) Recipe: Oreo CakeIf you are looking for a hardy annual that spreads fast & thick, has a long blooming period, recovers well from drought or rain, and comes in beautiful colors...look no farther than the WAVE petunias. A landscaper recommended them to me and they are so popular that I had a tough time finding them in the stores. I was told that they sell out almost as fast as they can stock them. They come in beautiful purples, pinks, blue, yellow, and white. You can easily spot the 6 packs (which run anywhere from $5-$6) by the pink container and (usually) a yellow handle that says "WAVE" on them. The larger plants will usually have a WAVE label somewhere in the pot. You can use them for ground cover, or in planters. They even have their own web site... http://www.wave-rave.com If you don't have web site access, you can usually find them at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, and Target. Unlike regular petunias, these variety will spread out to cover a square yard of garden space. So check them out and tell me how they work for you. POST IT...on your garden shopping list, and near your computer. * * * * * * * Recipe: Summertime TeaWe STILL have snow on the ground here in the DC area, but we can dream can't we. Here's a recipe for Summertime Tea. Steep 8 regular tea bags (or 2 family sized) in 4C almost boiling water for 5 min. Mix 6 oz. orange juice concentrate, thawed, 6 ox. lemonade concentrate, thawed, and 1 1/2C sugar in a gallon container. Combine tea and approximately 10C of water. Stir well. Add more water until the liquid measures one gallon. Serve over ice. Garnish with lemon and orange slices. Stir often while serving as the juices will settle. For more good recipes go to http://www.luzianne.com POST IT...in your recipe box. * * * * * * * Back Issue Treasure: July 15th, 1997Check out this issue to go along with the "What Should You Do?" TV program above. It will tell you about a great book to help you prepare yourself to avoid dangerous situations, and what the best self defense spray is to buy. Even if you don't have a video camera, you may be able to get a free video of your child from a participating Blockbuster in August. Want to make a lite cake, but out of applesauce? Here's a recipe in this issue to make a lite cake without the sauce. :-) To retrieve this back issue click HERE. * * * * * * * Missing Child Info: Deanna BeardsleeDeAnna Beardslee is a beautiful little 3 yr old white girl, with light brown hair, and blue eyes, 3' and 35 lbs. She has a scar on the right side of her forehead and a birthmark on her upper left inner thigh. She went missing on April 6th, from Herington, KS. P.)An elephant is drinking out of a river when he spots a turtle asleep on a log. The elephant ambles over and kicks the unsuspecting turtle clear across the river. "Why did you do that?" asks a passing giraffe. "Because I recognized it as the same turtle that took a nip out of my trunk 47 years ago." "Wow, what a memory!" says the giraffe. "Yes," says the elephant. "Turtle recall!" QUOTE"If we depend exclusively on defence measures, we shall increasingly behave like hunted creatures, running from one protective devise to another, each more complex and costly than the one before." --Rene Dubos (1900-1988: Microbiologist, Environmentalist, Educator and Writer) * * * * * * * Sponsorship InformationIf you are interested in helping to sponsor our ezine, or others in the Dollar Stretcher family, drop an email requesting additional info to: mailto:marketing@stretcher.com?subject=MAN.
