False Notifications

You just can't remember the name of THAT movie that THAT actor was in with the funny name. You and your friend are debating which movie contained a particular quote. Or perhaps you have discovered a character actor that you really like & want to find out what other movies he has been in. If you find yourself doing any of these things, then this web site is definitely for you. The Internet Movie Database is a comprehensive site with info listed by movie, actor/actress, and other areas, in addition to a quote search feature. They will also tell you if the movie is available (and in what formats...DVD or VCR) in America, England, or Germany. This is a helpful item for you NetFlix users to find out if a movie is available in DVD yet. So the next time you can't think of that bit of info that's "right on the tip of my tongue", head to this web site... http://www.imdb.com

Getting Rid of Fleas

This article deals with getting rid of fleas in a home. For an article on getting rid of fleas on your pets, see our back issue recommendation below. If you weren't able to stop the fleas on your pet from getting into the house, here are some non-toxic ways to get rid of them. Buy the cheapest flea collar you can find, stretch it out and then place it INSIDE your vacuum bag so that any fleas vacuumed up die in the bag. Then try to vacuum your carpet & furniture every day for a week or two. This will usually cover the life span of the fleas. I have talked to so many people who tried many chemicals & just using this vacuuming method worked better than anything else, without the smell or damp (from pesticide) carpet. If you still have a problem because of areas that may be hard to vacuum around, take a pie plate and fill it up with very soapy water and place in the problem location. Then take some kind of light, like a night light, or even a flash light, and place it very close to the plate at night with all other lights turned off. The light will attract the fleas & they will jump towards the light and hopefully right into the soapy water where they can't escape. They do make commercial versions of this trap with sticky paper, but I had no success with it myself. I still think the vacuum method works the best. Just put in a new collar whenever you change the bag.

Re-Lace those Shoes

Sometimes the reason that shoes don't fit (especially sports shoes), may have more to do with how they are laced. Whenever you are involved with sports, you should find shoes that fit well right from the start. There may be times when you find a shoe that feels great, but the heel slips just a smidge, or you feel like you need just slightly more room. So here's a site that shows you how to lace shoes for various fit problems. For those of you who might order from Road Runner Sports, they also enclose a pamphlet of the same whenever you purchase shoes from them. It may also help to adjust the lacing differently for a better fit as shoes age. http://www.aofas.org/lacing.asp

POST IT...print it out & take with you when you go shoe shopping, and also keep a copy near where you keep your shoes.

Helping Others Grieve

As we learn of many men & some women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, it would be a good time to talk about the stages of grief. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, M.D. is a psychiatrist and the author of the groundbreaking book, "On Death and Dying" http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0684839385/makeanote/  It should also be available at most libraries. Using her own experience with life threatening/changing health problems (read more about her at http://www.elisabethkublerross.com/ ), and those of others, she came up with 5 stages of grief that people tend to go through. These stages not only apply to those who are dealing with the death of a loved one, but can also apply to losses of other important things in our lives (e.g. divorce, illness, loss of a job, etc). Not everyone will go through every stage, and some may spend a long time in one phase, but a short time in another. But if we understand what they (or we) are going through, then we can be more understanding in our support. STAGE 1-Denial & Isolation-in this stage people will tend to be in a state of shock. They may try to act like nothing has happened, and want to isolate themselves from those who might want to offer support. Just trying to get them to talk about it may help in this stage. STAGE 2-Anger-usually anger directed at the person who died, the person who caused the death, medical personnel, & sometimes at God. During this stage it might help to just let them express their anger. STAGE 3-Bargaining-The grieving person will usually promise God, themselves, or their families that "if you just bring him back," or "...take away these feelings...then I will..." do whatever you promise. People are usually very serious & committed during this stage, but heading towards accepting the loss. STAGE 4-Depression-people can become depressed, & may even need medical attention for depression at this time. They do not need cheerful phrases from you, but just someone who will listen with kindness. They may need to talk about things over & over; be patient & remember that this is a stage. STAGE 5-Acceptance-This is the time when the griever will start feeling "normal" again. It isn't that they aren't still grieving, just that they are adjusting to the reality of the situation. If anyone seems to become "stuck" in a particular stage, then they may need good counseling to move on. But remember not everyone is on the same timetable. Be there for them, and be a friend. The book goes into much more detail than we can in this publication. POST IT...near your sympathy cards, to friends or family who are supporting someone who is grieving, or to family support groups.

Recipe: Easter Turkey?

For those of you having turkey for Easter (or a tip for your Thanksgiving dinner), here's a way to prepare the turkey so that even the white meat stays moist. Stuff your turkey with your favorite stuffing and lots of celery & onion. This helps keep the bird from getting too dry inside and out. Then cook it upside down in the pan, to keep the juices where most of the meat is. In other words, the flat part of the bird should be up and the rounded part with the white meat down. If the bird is one of those with the automatic pop-up timer, be sure to move it to a place where you can see it. And always remember to make sure the bird gets up to at least 180F for food safety. Back Issue Treasure: December 19th, 2001

In this back issue we recommend the "Sweet & Sugarfree" cookbooks. All of the sweet treats are made with fruit and fruit juices, no processed sugar or artificial sweeteners. We even included the Date Coffee Cake from one of the books to show you how great sugar-free can taste. You can learn how to get rid of fleas and ear infections your pet may be dealing with. We told you about the Ultimate Moving Checklist that has now become our most popular page. You can make your move a smooth one by using this handy guide. A book that may be controversial, but I think would help many marriages out there is discussed. And don't forget to check out our joke & quote.

Final Words

JOKE

A mystery-lover takes his place in the theater for opening night, but his seat is way back in the theater, far from the stage. The man calls an usher over and whispers, ''I just love a good mystery, and I have been anxiously anticipating the opening of this play. However, in order to carefully follow the clues and fully enjoy the play, I have to watch a mystery close up. Look how far away I am! If you can get me a better seat, I'll give you a handsome tip.'' The usher nods and says he will be back shortly. Looking forward to a large tip, the usher speaks with his co-workers in the box office, hoping to find some closer tickets. With just three minutes left until curtain, he finds an unused ticket at the Will Call window and snatches it up. Returning to the man in the back of the theater, he whispers, ''Follow me.'' The usher leads the man down to the second row, and proudly points out the empty seat right in the middle. ''Thanks so much,'' says the theatergoer, ''This seat is perfect.'' He then hands the usher a quarter. The usher looks down at the quarter, leans over and whispers, ''The butler did it in the parlor with the candlestick.''
