Help Iraqi Children

Samaritan's Purse, the same great organization we have written of before (Christmas Child Shoeboxes), is poised and ready to go in and help the children of Iraq as soon as circumstances permit. If you would like to read about, or even be a part of their efforts, go to... http://www.samaritanspurse.org/home.asp Click on the main photo of the Iraqi people. The next page will tell you about the project, and there is a place on the side to click on a donation link. At the donation link where you enter all your info, you can specify you want your money to go to the Iraq Project. If you don't have web site access you can email them at projectinfo@samaritan.org for more info. \

Support Our Troops w/Mail

Unfortunately due to security concerns they are no longer delivering regular mail if addressed to "Any Service Member". But if you'd like your efforts to be more personal, mail things to the loved ones of family or friends. As a former military (Special Forces) wife, I can tell you that the mail they receive is worth more to them than gold. The more the merrier! So get your place of worship, your classrooms, or your clubs involved. Send letters, cards, magazine articles, photos, and goodie boxes. While they do have some areas with exchange stores, some do not, and those with stores usually have long lines. Some things they like to receive that have been in the news: toilet paper, sunscreen, toothpaste, and disposable cameras (also check the USO web site below which also has a list of items they provide and you could send to those you know as well. If you would like to send something without having to wrap it yourself, there are companies that will send things on your behalf. The USO will send a package (not to a specific serviceman) for a donation of $25. Go to... http://www.usometrodc.org/care.html#support  You can add a personal message to be attached to one of the care packages they send. If you don't have web site access you can call 1-866-USO-GIVE to find out how to make a donation. (NOTE FOR OUR INTERNATIONAL READERS: If you are aware of a similar program in your country, please let me know.) Many commercial companies as well are making it easy to send goodies. For example, the See's Candy Company (a personal favorite at our house) will send packages to APO/FPO's and even has a warm weather list of items that you won't have to worry about melting, at very reasonable prices. Go to... http://www.sees.com  main site, and... http://www.sees.com/nochocprod.cfm  for their warm weather list. They will also attach a personal message. For our international readers, they also ship out of the country.

Support Our Troops in Other Ways

Here are some other ways to support our troops. Go to... http://www.presidentialprayerteam.org/troopsadopt.htm  Where you can request the name (no identifying info will be provided, other than name & general family info) of a service member for whom to pray. You can also submit a name for prayer adoption. Go to... http://www.defendamerica.mil/nmam.html  to "sign" a general petition supporting the troops. Go to... http://www.anyservicemember.org/pleaseread.html  to post a message to a particular branch. (NOTE TO OUR INTERNATIONAL READERS: if you are aware of similar sites for your country, be sure to let me know).

Staying in Touch by Mail w/Kids(or Anyone!)

"The Long Distance Grandmother" isn't JUST for grandmothers. This book is LOADED with great ideas for staying in touch, mainly with children, but the ideas will often work for adults as well. A lot of the ideas fit into a regular envelope, such as writing a message and then cutting it up like a puzzle. Sometimes when my husband was away, I would mail him little special things to send back to our children in his letters (obviously when they are in the field, shopping may be a problem). But a lot of the ideas require no special items, but just a pen & paper. It also has ideas broken down by age from the youngest to the teens (adults?:-). So whether you are a parent far from home, or a long distance grandparent/aunt or uncle, this is a great book to have on hand. Go to..."The Long Distance Grandmother"  to read more about it.

POST IT...on your shopping list and near your stationary, and to your friends/family.

Back Issue Treasure: April 16th, 1997

This one REALLY goes back in time, to our very first issue. In this issue you can learn how to have family & friends receive FREE greeting cards on special occasions from the White House. Learn how to avoid standing in line to get stamps, but have them delivered right to your own mailbox at no additional charge. The laundry tip in this issue has been a big hit with our readers and you may be able to stop hunting for those spots before you wash, and just let that pre-wash spray collect dust by following our suggestion. Learn how to get more gas for the money by filling up at the right time of day. For those wearing boots all day long and longer, whether military or in other professions, we have a time-tested tip to help avoid that foot fungus (AKA "Jungle Rot") that never wants to go away. It may be something you may want to add to that care package above. We'll also give you tips on picking the slowest time to go shopping.

Final Words

JOKE

True Story from Front Royal, VA: A bank robber fled the bank with several thousand dollars, but dropped several $100 bills along the way as he tried stuffing the money in his pockets. When he got to his getaway car, he realized he had locked his keys inside. When beating on the car window with a large piece of wood only drew him the attention of civilians, the robber abandoned the car and fled on foot with them in pursuit. When the civilians caught him, the robber tried to shoot them, but instead shot his own leg. One of the men also shot the suspect when he kept fighting. He had little reason to think this robbery would go well. Police said he served nearly 20 years in prison after being convicted of a bank robbery in Maryland in 1963. Maybe it's time he considered another line of work. And let's hear it for a "Citizens' Arrest!"

QUOTE

"The highest courage is to dare to be yourself in the face of adversity. Choosing right over wrong, ethics over convenience, and truth over popularity...these are the choices that measure your life. Travel the path of integrity without looking back, for there is never a wrong time to do the right thing."
