Semi-Homemade Cookbook

Okay...I LOVE this cookbook. "Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade Cooking" has the look of a gourmet cookbook, but has the easy recipes for those of us on the go. Sandra Lee has a 70/30 philosophy when it comes to her recipes... 70% ready-made products, plus 30% fresh ingredients. This combo gives us recipes that can usually be prepared in 30 min. or less, but look & taste like we spent all day in the kitchen. The photos of each recipe give you ideas for presentation (for those like myself who are "creatively challenged":-), not to mention making your mouth water and giving you the difficult decision of which recipe you want to try first. If all this weren't enough, each recipe also comes with estimated Prep/Cooking times, cost per serving guidelines, wine & music recommendations. Normally, if you're like me, you would look at the photos of these gorgeous creations and think, "obviously this would take too much time to prepare," but then I look at the recipe and think, "I CAN DO THIS!" So if you want to make an impressive meal, but still have time to clean the house the same day, this is the book to have. Be sure to scroll down to our recipe section, where Ms. Lee has been kind enough to allow us to reprint just a sample of the good things you will find in this cookbook.

If you need a little taste before you buy, then check out Sandra Lee's web site... http://www.semi-homemade.com/

Just like her cookbook, it is full of great ideas, recipes, and you can even sign up for a free ezine. This is the first time I've ever bought a cookbook, and liked it so much that I immediately starting looking forward to her next one.

Cruise Ship Inspection Site

Since I'm right in the middle of the DC area's "Blizzard of '03", thought a mention of warmer climates might be in order. :-) Cruises have become a very popular vacation. With their all inclusive packages, it may be just the thing for a family or a second honeymoon. But you may have read of the outbreaks of illnesses on the ships in recent months. So how do you protect yourself? The CDC runs a site that lists the results of health inspections on cruise ships. You can look them up by ship's name, and see what rating they got, as well as the details of any problems encountered.

Go to... http://www2.cdc.gov/nceh/vsp/vspmain.asp

POST IT...under "travel agents" in your phone book, or send to friends thinking of cruising. (Editor's Note: The CDC site was having some problems as this issue went to press, so if you try the link & it doesn't work, check back again in a few days.)

Terror Alert Prep. List

Several readers have asked me for a Terror Alert Preparation List. In this case, I defer to the American Red Cross site's comprehensive list at... http://www.redcross.org  There you can click on the alert level for specific recommendations, or you can click on Disaster Kit lists. While the Red Cross does have kits for purchase, you can usually purchase the same materials on your own (and probably have most of them around the house already) for a lot less money. It never hurts to be prepared for the worst, but hope for the best.

POST IT...on your computer, and on your shopping list.

Recipe: Semi-Homemade's Ravioli Stroganoff

My husband loves pasta as much as I love Mexican food. So I've learned some simple, sumptuous ways to be creative. This mushroom cream sauce is extraordinary and the ground turkey adds a new tasty twist. I've learned to love pasta almost as much as my husband does. Maybe my next book should be 50 percent Mexican food, 50 percent Italian food. Should I call it "Tortillas to Pasta" or "Pasta to Tortillas"? Let me know your thoughts (see page 204).

Serves 4

1 package (25-ounce) refrigerated cheese ravioli, Rosetto® 2 teaspoons vegetable oil, Wesson® 1 pound lean ground turkey 1/2 teaspoon Italian Seasoning: Classic Herbs, McCormick® 1 can (10 3/4-ounce) condensed cream of mushroom soup, Campbell's® 1 cup whole milk 3/4 cup sour cream

Prep time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes

Preparation:

Prepare ravioli according to package instructions; drain and set aside. Meanwhile, in a medium frying pan, heat oil over high heat. Add turkey and seasoning, Sauté until turkey is brown, breaking it into 1-inch pieces with a spatula, about 6 minutes. Stir in soup and milk. Bring to a simmer. Remove from heat. Stir in sour cream. Gently toss ravioli in sauce to coat. Transfer to plates and serve.

Wine: 1999 Lindeman Bin® Pinot Nior

Music: Maxwell, "Embryo"
