Souper Bowl Party

The Super Bowl is only a couple of weeks away, but there is still time to plan a SOUPER Bowl party. Many organizations are encouraging "Souper Bowl" donations on Super Bowl Sunday. Churches will have volunteers holding soup cans for donations and members are encouraged to donate a dollar each and also bring in a canned good. The donations can go for activities within the church or for an outside donation. This is also a great idea for youth group parties, or your own home party. You can donate the money and canned goods to local charities. To read more about it, go to http://www.souperbowl.org

POST IT...on your calendar, and near your clergy's phone number.

Sheers

Did you resolve to be more thrifty & save some money this year? Here's a tip you may not have considered. Why not use sheers under your curtains & drapes? This is a very common practice in Europe, but seems to have fallen out of favor in the USA. During those sunny winter days, you can use sheers alone to let that light & heat in without fading your carpets. At night it provides an extra layer of insulation to keep the cold out. During the summer, on the sunny side of the house, it can also provide that extra layer to keep the heat out. If you need the light, the sheers will let it in, but, again, not fade the carpet.

POST IT...near your shopping list, or curtain catalogs.

Fetch Book

Here's another way to keep that resolution to save more money. Type in a book title on the Fetch Book site, and it will give you a list of prices from different sellers. I like this site more than similar ones, because it seems less cluttered & easier to read. Also when I did a few trial checks to compare the site to similar ones, the Fetch Book site had more accurate info, and better prices. Check it out at... http://www.fetchbook.info

SpyWare/PopUp Controls

Recently our computer had an encounter with a disreputable company that downloads (without your permission) Spyware onto your computer to track your internet visits (which sites you go to) and then reports them back to the company. Not only was this invasive, but something about the program crashed our Internet Explorer. Thankfully our webmaster came to the rescue, and installed SpyBot, a free program that can check your computer for SpyWare and get rid of it when found. He also installed Pop-up Stopper at the same time, another freebie that gets rid of all the pop-ups, pop-unders, and other garbage that web sites can pepper you with. I never really thought much about all the pop-ups I closed, but it just seems that my internet surfing is so much easier now without all the interruptions. You can hit these web sites to download your freebies. SPYBOT-Finds & eliminates SpyWare from your computer.

Recipe: Bath Salts

With this cold snap hitting so much of the country for the next couple of weeks, thought you might like a recipe for making those long hot baths even nicer, or soaking those cold, tired feet. In a bowl, mix 1/2gal. Epsom salts, a few drops of food coloring, and scent (you can use vanilla, almond, or peppermint extracts, or your favorite perfume). Mix well and place in a pretty jar with a ribbon. Use 1/2C per bath (less for soaking feet :-). This would be a great gift for the elderly, to send to the military overseas (those boots all day), or anyone on their feet all day. Or for ANYONE looking for a nice relaxing soak. Back Issue Treasure: October 17th, 2001 Issue (Loan Interest Decrease for Military Servicemen, Our Readers' Favorite Book Recommendation, Tinting Windows, and More)

(Loan Interest Decrease for Military Servicemen, Our Readers' Favorite Book Recommendation, Tinting Windows, and More) Did you know that if you are called to active duty military service from the reserves, and can prove a financial burden because of the decrease in salary (usually by showing that your civilian salary was a lot higher than your military one), then you may be able to get all your loan interest (houses, cars, credit cards, etc.) decreased to 6% while you are on active duty? You can find the web page with the details in this back issue. Be sure to forward to anyone you know who might need this benefit. A review of our most popular book recommendation, "Stepping Heavenward" is also included and so far we haven't heard from anyone who wasn't touched by it. Looking to tint those windows before the heat of summer arrives, check out our article on tinting recommendations (note the Better Business Bureau link should be http://www.bbb.org  for national contacts). Also get a great pumpkin bread recipe, and find out why you want the "4am Friends" in the quote section.
