But here's a tip that may change all that. Did you know that your hair has "tiles". Sort of like shingles on a roof. If you don't believe me just take one of your hairs and press it between your thumb nail and pad of your index finger and pull. When you pull the root towards your nail you should hear a squeaking, but not the other direction. One of the reasons our hair, esp. naturally curly hair, gets so frizzy is because we disturb these tiles. The flatter they lie, the smoother & shinier your hair looks. When you wash your hair, instead of just rubbing your hair back & forth with your fingers or drying it with a towel in the same way, try something new. Brush your hair back before you shampoo it in the shower (if you use a sink then brush it towards the front). Then when you apply the shampoo, only massage it in the direction of the ends of your hair NOT the roots. You can use a slight side to side motion as you move your hand down the hair shafts. Rinse out in the same direction, and use conditioner in the same way. When you dry your hair with the towel press it against your hair and move it in the direction of the ends of the hair. Do NOT "rub" your head as you dry it. If you are doing all this correctly then your hair shouldn't have hardly any tangles at all when you go to comb it out. Having naturally curly hair, I had tried practically every product on the market for "frizz," and nothing worked. Once I started handling my hair in this way, within a week I noticed an improvement, and now after using this method for a month it is like I have a whole new head of hair. So you may not notice a difference by Thanksgiving, but by Christmas you may have that Holiday Hair you are looking for. If you'd like your hair to look even nicer AND give yourself more time & money for holiday activities, consider a style that will avoid blow-drying and stop all the chemical treatments like perms, colorings, etc. All these things tend to be hard on the hair making it coarser, frizzier, drier, and more likely to break or fall out. POST IT...near your shampoo. * * * * * * * Resolution Helps for WomenIt's resolution time again and you don't know where to start? Well, how about with a book that offers encouragement AND practical tips? "Home is Where the Mom Is" is a book that is so loaded with good info, that it should be in 2 volumes, but somehow the author was able to get all the info into one compact paperback. I can't think of anything that she DOESN'T cover in the book. Whether you are single, married, with or without children, this book has something for everyone. Ideas on taking care of yourself, family, children, others, and your home. This is my new favorite book for bridal shower gifts (they also do gift baskets that include the book). This lady has produced a very thorough collection of helpful info for anytime, and just about any situation. For more info on the book, or to place an order (if you order within the next 2 days, then you should receive your order by Christmas...purchasing for a newlywed perhaps?:-), go to... http://www.homeiswherethemomis.com If you don't have web site access, you can order the book by using the following email address... homemom@megavision.com Now if you need some motivation before the book arrives, then check out this web site produced by one of our Australian readers... http://www.realisticliving.netfirms.com This site has lots of wonderful tips on getting your house organized & saving money. Even if you only have a little time, the tips are grouped by room and have ideas that break the job up into nice little bite-sized pieces. Have that printer ready, or a nice pad of paper, to jot down the ideas you want to try first. POST IT...near your computer, and where you might keep bridal shower games or cards. * * * * * * * Return to Sender InfoMost people who send out Christmas cards get at least a few back "Return to Sender," but did you know that even if the forwarding order has expired, the new address is usually listed on the yellow label? Don't lose touch with your friends, be sure to check the label for the new address before giving up. POST IT...in your address book, and near your stamps. * * * * * * * Sinus Congestion Helps'Tis the season for lots of colds, flu, & possibly even allergies, and many "victims" suffer from very stuffy sinuses. This is sort of a combo of 2 tips that I've heard before that often provide relief on their own, but may increase the relief for you when brought together. Take a heating pad (or heat pack) and place over your sinuses, then take a hand held massager and place over the heat pack. Even a short time provided me with tremendous relief. The combination of the heat & vibration help to open up the passages & loosen the congestion. But be sure not to keep the heat pack on too long, perhaps 10 min. off & 10 min on, then repeat. I would not recommend this for anyone with a fever though. And, as always, be sure to check with your own physician to make sure this would be okay for you. POST IT...near your decongestants/antihistamines. * * * * * * * Recipe: Easy Snowman Cookies (& New Product Tip)Take the store-bought Oreo cookies that are dipped in white chocolate. Use plain white frosting to attach the following to make the snowman's "face"...a chocolate chip for each eye, an orange gumdrop cut into a carrot shape for the nose, thin piece of string red licorice for smile (red long sprinkles could be substituted), 2 small flattened round gumdrops of the same color for ear muffs. Sprinkle the whole thing with a little powdered sugar to make it look like snow. This will be a fun one for the kids. POST IT...on your shopping list & in your recipe box. NEW PRODUCT TIP (from Kathy K.): Kathy has written to tell us that the new Reynolds Non-Stick Aluminum Foil works very well. She was even able to reuse the foil for another batch of goodies it came out so clean. Check it out with your holiday baking & let me know what you think. * * * * * * * Back Issue Treasure: January 15th, 1999 Issue (Recycling Christmas Cards, Buying a Car Online, Funeral Planning & Avoiding Rip-Offs, Best Places To Live in USA, More on Pet Supply Savings, Valentine Tree, and more)Many people have their carpets (& walls) cleaned for the holidays, this back issue has tips to keep them looking nice long after the company has gone. You will also find some suggestions for saving money by using less meat in ways you may not even notice. Then there is the "To Go Box" calorie cutter, a very easy way to cut back on those extra holiday pounds, or at any other time of the year for that matter. Find ways to help your child (or yourself) find the right career for them and prepare for it. And a yummy recipe that will make you feel like it is summer again. Can you imagine the agony you would feel if your child just disappeared & you had no idea what had happened to them or who they were with? This is not just something to imagine for Shawn Hornbeck's family. The 11 yr old boy disappeared while riding his bike to a friend's house just a short distance from his own, last Oct. He is Caucasian & has brown hair & eyes, weighs about 90 lbs & is about 4'8". There was no sign of his bike either, a neon green 20-inch NEXT "ShockZone" Boys' Bike. You can go to this web site for photos to print out and additional info. Do you think you may have seen him? If you live in the area, did you notice that a local kid showed up with a similar bike about the same time? If you have ANY info on Shawn, please don't hesitate to contact his family or the authorities. http://www.shawnhornbeck.com/ POST IT...in your vehicle, or place of business if you live anywhere near the area.
