Holiday Hair

The holidays are coming and our hair never seems to do what we want it to do. But here's a tip that may change all that. Did you know that your hair has "tiles". Sort of like shingles on a roof. If you don't believe me just take one of your hairs and press it between your thumb nail and pad of your index finger and pull. When you pull the root towards your nail you should hear a squeaking, but not the other direction. One of the reasons our hair, esp. naturally curly hair, gets so frizzy is because we disturb these tiles. The flatter they lie, the smoother & shinier your hair looks. When you wash your hair, instead of just rubbing your hair back & forth with your fingers or drying it with a towel in the same way, try something new. Brush your hair back before you shampoo it in the shower (if you use a sink then brush it towards the front). Then when you apply the shampoo, only massage it in the direction of the ends of your hair NOT the roots. You can use a slight side to side motion as you move your hand down the hair shafts. Rinse out in the same direction, and use conditioner in the same way. When you dry your hair with the towel press it against your hair and move it in the direction of the ends of the hair. Do NOT "rub" your head as you dry it. If you are doing all this correctly then your hair shouldn't have hardly any tangles at all when you go to comb it out. Having naturally curly hair, I had tried practically every product on the market for "frizz," and nothing worked. Once I started handling my hair in this way, within a week I noticed an improvement, and now after using this method for a month it is like I have a whole new head of hair. So you may not notice a difference by Thanksgiving, but by Christmas you may have that Holiday Hair you are looking for. If you'd like your hair to look even nicer AND give yourself more time & money for holiday activities, consider a style that will avoid blow-drying and stop all the chemical treatments like perms, colorings, etc. All these things tend to be hard on the hair making it coarser, frizzier, drier, and more likely to break or fall out.

Dishwasher Tips

We're all ready to get our holiday guests something to drink. We pull out a glass in front of them, and then realize there is a residue on the glass, then another, & another. We begin to wonder if our guests are getting concerned with the cleanliness of our home. We have probably all had those moments, unfortunately some more often than others due to the hardness of the water, brand of dishwasher, or family members who load incorrectly. But we also don't want to waste water or energy by running longer cycles than necessary or buying expensive soap; and every family is different with the amount of washing that is needed. So try this...starting with the dish detergent on hand, set your washer to the maximum cycle. Usually this means the pots & pans cycle, the longest dial cycle, hot temperature wash, and filling all detergent cups. Run water from the kitchen faucet until hot before you start the dishwasher, so it is going in hot to begin with. If the dishes are clean, then in later uses, you can slowly back off the time, cycles, or amount of detergent, until you find a place when the dishes are no longer clean. Forget the "heated dry" cycle, this is a place where you can save money. In practically every place we have lived (11 dishwashers in 20 yrs), I've been able to use the shortest normal cycle w/cheap detergent. However, our latest dishwasher needs the longest pot & pan cycle, heated wash, and still didn't do the job. If this happens to you, I recommend using the new Cascade Complete Powder Detergent. This has worked very well for us. It is a little more expensive, but how much does it cost you to keep re-washing your dishes. Snore Relief

You are sooooo tired from a long day of holiday activity and you just want to get a good night sleep. Unfortunately your spouse's snoring (or perhaps even your own) keeps you up. Now we've all heard the suggestions to lose weight, avoid caffeine/alcohol, go to bed at the same time, or sleep on your side. But let's face it...our schedules are in almost a constant state of flux, with holiday meals, late night activities, and when was the last time ANYONE was able to remain in one position all night? So if you have problems with snoring, then try the above, but you might also want to consider "Breath Right" nose strips or their new "Snore Relief" throat spray. I've known many people who have said the strips work for them, and our family has personally seen that the throat spray seems to work well too. No, I don't get any kick-backs, the only time I recommend a product is when I think it really works, and when I think my readers would also benefit by hearing about it. Give it a try & tell me if it helps you. For more info on these products & snoring, click HERE.

Check with the Dealer

Whenever you have a car problem, even if it is out of warranty, check with the dealer. Often there are recalls or warranty extensions that you may have missed. Sometimes the dealers will notify you, sometimes they don't. Or maybe your new address hasn't caught up with them yet. Even if you took your car to a non-dealer mechanic, you can usually still be reimbursed. For example, our 1999 Honda Accord recently had a clogged EGR valve. Since it was out of warranty, I took it to our regular mechanic and even there, the bill came to over $400. They even mentioned that a newer Accord had come in that month with the same problem. I checked the internet, but couldn't find any recalls. However, when I called the dealer's service department, they said that while there hadn't been a recall (semantics), that there had been a warranty extension to 8 yrs/80,000 miles. They gave me the number to the National Honda office, which assured me that they would send me a check to reimburse me for the cost of the repair. So always check, you never know if you might save yourself an expensive bill. And since I know that Hondas are popular with our readers, you might also want to know that they have extended the warranties on transmissions to 7 yrs/100,000 miles for the following vehicles: 2000-2001 Odysseys, 2000-2001 Accord (automatics), 2000-2001 Preludes, and 2000-2003 Acura CL & TL cars.

Recipe: Pumpkin Pie Layered Dessert

This is my personal adaptation of a parfait recipe from Mrs. Smith's & Cool Whip. With all the things that have to be done for a holiday dinner, a single dish dessert is easier than multiple dishes, not to mention the lack of space in the fridge for those special meals. Prepare a pumpkin pie using your favorite frozen or homemade recipe, bake & cool. Prepare a 4 oz box of instant vanilla pudding according to package directions, but only use 3 1/2C of milk. Chill. Take a large glass (if available) salad serving bowl. Break up half the pie into chunks & spread on bottom of bowl. Take half an 8 oz tub of whipped topping & spread on top of pumpkin pie layer. Cut half of small container of pound cake into small cubes and spread on top of whipped topping layer. Then spread half of vanilla pudding on top of that. Then spread 1/2C of fresh raspberries (would probably also work well with frozen/rinsed, or canned berries of other types too) on top of that. Repeat all layers. Chill. When you are ready to serve, spoon some of dessert into individual dessert dishes, put a spoonful of whipped topping on top, & drizzle with a little caramel sauce.

Bring these little ones home for the holidays. Shelby (3-yrs-old) & Hanna (2-yrs-old) were kidnapped by their non-custodial mother Heather Geraci from Cohoes, NY. The girls both have red hair. Final Words

JOKE (from Geoff C.)

Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Person asked the young MBA fresh out of MIT, "And what starting salary were you looking for?"
The candidate said, "In the neighborhood of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package."
The HR Person said, "Well, what would you say to a package of 5-weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every 2 years - say, a red Corvette?"
The Engineer sat up straight and said, "Wow!!! Are you kidding?"
And the HR Person said, "Certainly, ...but you started it."
