Editor's Note: Reviews & New Feature

Occasionally a little note about the ezine itself is needed to answer readers' questions or introduce a new feature. In this note, we do both. First, I have had some readers email to ask if I can do a review on a book they have written, or a product they produce. The answer is "yes" and "no". If someone would like to send me a courtesy copy of a book or a product for me to review, then I will be more than happy to do that. But I make no promises. I would never recommend any product or book unless I truly felt it was a good thing, and that my readers would benefit. So far, the few samples that have come my way have been good, and I did feel comfortable recommending them. So if you have something you think would be useful to the Make a Note readers, then do feel free to contact me at the email address at the bottom of the ezine. Some of our most helpful info has come from our readers.

then click on Henty audiotapes. If you do not have web site access you can also contact Timberdoodle by phone (360)426-0672 or email mailbag@timberdoodle.com, and they do accept international orders. To sign up to receive free email alerts from Mr. Hodges as new titles become available, AND receive a special discount on each new title at that time, send an email to hodgesfamily@characterlink.net with your request to be added to the alert list. Remember that Christmas is coming and these tapes are ideal for fans of historical adventure fiction for young and old. If you get them for a car trip, you may find yourself driving a little further than you planned just so you can hear what happens next! Instead of hearing, "Are we there yet?," you may be hearing, "Do we HAVE to stop now?". :-)

POST IT...under your internet bookmarks, on your calendar before any vacation days, and on your shopping list.

We also add a new feature with this issue. Imagine for a moment that your child has disappeared from your side. The panic you feel inside tears you apart. Now imagine it going on, and on, and on. Every year children go missing all around the world. We grieve when bodies are found, and rejoice with the families that are reunited. We wish we could help in some way, but they're probably "not in OUR area". Why not, they're in SOMEONE'S area. I know you see a lot of missing child alerts, maybe they don't move you anymore, but please just take a look, that's all I ask. In each issue, I will provide a link to info about a missing child, please just take a look, and maybe you can be a part of a special miracle.

POST IT...near your computer.

NEW Questionable Doctors Web Site

In our May 16th, 2001 issue, we did a story about the "Questionable Doctors" book that provides info about doctors in your area that may have been disciplined, but are still continuing to practice. Only about 1% of doctors fall into this category, but if you happen to choose one of them, it really doesn't matter what the percentage is. Believe me, the good doctors would like to revoke the licenses of these problem doctors as much as we do. These doctors are still practicing in spite of being disciplined for serious offenses such as sexual abuse or misconduct, substandard care, incompetence or negligence, criminal convictions, inappropriate prescribing of drugs, or substance abuse. Think they exaggerate? How about a doctor disciplined for a series of inappropriate sexual contacts...allowed to continue to practice as long as it is only on male patients...would you want to take your child to that doctor? Or a physician convicted of attempted murder still practicing after an 8 month suspension of his license. But not only is this a safety and health issue, it is also a financial one. If you go to a substandard physician then you could end up paying for treatment you don't need, having to pay for an additional workup w/a new physician later, or paying for more extensive treatments if something is not caught early on. Well, the people at Public Citizen (publishers of the book), have now opened up a directory on their web site. The FREE features enable you to click on a state & get a list of all the doctors disciplined in that state in alphabetical order. If you click on the doctor's name you get the city they lived in at the time of the sanction, and the state that sanctioned them. You are also able to open an account & be able to receive reports on 10 doctors, w/all the details of the disciplinary action for $10. So you can check a name free, but the details are a paid service. For more information go to http://www.questionabledoctors.org If you don't have web site access, you can still request our back issue with info on how to order the actual book.

9/11 Song of Comfort

Every now & then a song comes to have new & deeper meaning because of events unforeseen. This song is one of them. The song was released in March 2001, but with a hauntingly beautiful melody, and lyrics that speak of "fire on the night I died"..."a hero on the other side"..."when the building fell"..."soul goes on", you can't help but remember the family & friends we lost just 6 months later. While I believe the song will bring tears to many eyes, I also think it will be a comfort to those who suffered a loss. I'm really surprised that I didn't hear this song at any of the memorial services, it would have been a perfect choice. The CD is Janis Ian's "God and the FBI", and the song is called "On the Other Side." To read the lyrics you can go to http://www.janisian.com/lyrics.html and scroll down to "On the Other Side" & click on it. To listen to a short sample of the song (which doesn't do it justice at all) or to order the CD, go to

New Site for Clergy & Their Families

Okay, I don't know how new this site actually is, but a lot of the features are new to me. Clergy Appreciation Month is October, so be sure to make that shepherd feel appreciated. This is a good site to let them know about, and will also offer additional info to those planning surprises for their clergy. The site is filled with articles, help line info, and other practical help. Check it out at http://www.family.org/pastors

Recipe: Pastel de Carne (From Ruth V. and Argentina)

In a large skillet, brown 1 pound ground beef, drain & rinse. Stir in 1 tsp. each of salt and oregano, 1/2 tsp. paprika, 1/2 C chopped green olives, 2 peeled & chopped hard boiled eggs, and 1 med. onion chopped. After mixing well, pour into a casserole dish. Make 4 servings of mashed potatoes in a separate pan, adding enough milk to make fluffy, but still stiff enough to hold their shape. Season with salt & pepper, then drop in mounds on top of meat mixture in casserole dish. Sprinkle generously w/shredded cheese. Bake uncovered at 350F for 25-30 min or until heated through. Very yummy.

Final Words

JOKE (from Pastor Chip H.)

There was a man with wealth beyond imagination. He loved to look at his money, gold, & precious stones. He had worked so hard all his life to get this wealth and wished so much to be able to take them with him when he died, that he actually asked God to be able to do so. To his surprise he actually heard God answer that he would make an exception and allow him to bring one suitcase with him. He filled up a suitcase with all of his gold, and a few months later he passed away. He approached the Pearly Gates and there was St. Peter waiting for him. St. Peter told him that he couldn't bring anything with him, but the man said that God had made an exception and he could check on it. Sure enough, St. Peter came back & said that the man was right and that God had made an exception. So he asked the man what treasure he had chosen. The man struggled to lift the suitcase onto the table, then proudly opened it up. St. Peter took one look at the gold and said, "All the things you could have brought and you brought PAVEMENT?!?" (If you don't get it, see Rev. 21:21)
