More Dog Years

For those of you with canine friends, some new research has indicated that dogs live longer & healthier if they eat less than the average dog. Most dogs are given too much food, and tend to be overweight. Dogs who were given 25% less than dogs on an unrestricted diet lived about 10%-15% longer, which works out to about 2 yrs for labs (one of the most popular family dogs). Most of the time, the amounts listed on the backs of dog food bags are too much, according to one vet we used. But be sure to check with your vet before you make any decisions about your dog's diet.

POST IT...near your dog's food.

Flower Delivery Tips

Just a few flower tips to add to the comments in our lengthy article in the June 14th, 1997 Issue (Make a Note #5). Talk to those local florists, don't just call them up & tell them EXACTLY what you want. Recently I saw a beautiful arrangement of tulips & ordered them to be sent to a friend in the hospital (feel better soon Gail! :-), the florist just took my order down. But when I asked if it was a nice arrangement, she said that it was, but that hospitals are kept so warm that the tulips never last long there. I asked her what she might suggest & she said she could do a very nice mixed arrangement. Many florists may only offer advice upon request because it may sound like they are trying to up the order otherwise, so ASK! Only those local florists know what is looking good right at that moment. Maybe you want a dozen roses sent when the batch of roses that week was less than ideal. Give them your price range & ask for their advice. Consider how long the person will be a patient and how much space they have. If they are in a long term facility a nice plant might be a better choice, but if they are limited on space it would be better to get a small one. Try to find plants that can be ignored a bit on the watering. If the patient will be going home soon, a large bulky arrangement may be a challenge to carry down to the car.

POST IT...with a copy of the past issue article under "Florists".

Background Checks

This is probably more for our readers with small businesses, or in hiring positions. Many small businesses or families cannot afford to pay for background checks on the people they are hiring. Here is another option. At this web site http://www.mybackgroundcheck.com the potential employee would be asked to go to this site & provide their info so that a check may be done. The potential employee pays the small fee involved. I'd venture to say that those who have a problem in their background, wouldn't return with the background info, so you haven't wasted any money checking them out just to turn them down. Those who are "clean", and truly interested in the job, probably won't mind spending a little money to get a job and you have your peace of mind too.

Day Trip Books

In most towns, someone has put together a little book of day trips for the area. These books can usually be found in local consignment/craft/gift stores. The local library is also a good place to check, but in most cases you'll want to have a copy of your own to take around with you. Some of the best places to visit in an area have been around so long that even locals have forgotten about them. If you can't find a trip book, then try a book on the local history. You could put your own trip together from the stories in the history book. If you are still looking for a good travel book with local info, check out the Baedeker guides, they have them for certain US cities/states & also for other countries. We loved the one we had for Germany.

POST IT...on your shopping list, & under "Travel Agents" (it might also be good to check with the latter about day trips).

Recipe: Frozen Peach Dessert

The days are getting warmer and they come home from school hot & ready to cool off with a snack. Instead of the usual, here's a great recipe idea. Open a can of peach halves, place a whole strawberry (frozen or fresh) in the center of each peach half. Top with whipped topping & freeze. Thaw 20-30 min before serving. Final Words

JOKE (Actually a funny, but true quote)

"If you think you're too small to make a difference, you've obviously never been in bed with a mosquito."

--Michelle Walker

QUOTE

"One's integrity can give a person something to rely on when perspective seems to blur, when rules and principles seem to waver, and when faced with a hard choice of right and wrong. A clear conscience is one's only protection."

--Admiral James B. Stockdale, USN (Ret.), Medal of Honor recipient, and POW in Vietnam for eight years -- tortured 15 times, in leg irons for two years, and in solitary confinement for four years. For more about this amazing man's story and the faith & family love that pulled him through it all. Read "In Love and War" by Stockdale. Out of print now, but may be found at your local library.
