NOTE: Each entry has a suggested "POST IT..." location at the end. We recommend that you print out the ezine, cut out each entry, & post it in these locations to make it easier for you to find when you need it. And if you like what you read, be sure to pass it on to someone else who can use it. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "Endurance" Nova Special on TVOne of most popular books we have ever recommended was "Endurance." This book chronicles the true story, from the journals of the men themselves, of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic journey. In 1914 he set out on the ship, "Endurance", with 27 men. It is no secret that the ship sank and the men were stranded for almost 2 years before they were rescued. Remember that this was before the time of Gortex, polypropylene, or high tech camping gear. Not a single man was lost, owing in great part to the incredible leadership of Shackleton. This is a great story to read aloud for the whole family, or by yourself on the edge of your seat. Well, for those of you who have already read it, get that VCR ready to record. PBS is going to air a special NOVA on Tuesday night, March 26th, probably from 8-10pm (PST/EST) in most areas (check your local TV guides or web site for local listings), on the voyage of the "Endurance". Included will be film, photos, and even interviews with descendants of the men. This book should be required reading for anyone in a leadership position. So if you've read the book, watch the program for a return to the adventure. If you haven't read the book, you'll want to buy it to get the stories that the TV special didn't have room for. But don't miss this one. For more information, go to the web site at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/shackleton/ If you don't have PBS in your area, you can still read about it online, & perhaps order the video. POST IT...on your calendar, circle in your TV guide, or tape to your TV. * * * * * * * Important Military ID/Tricare InfoIf you have let your military ID expire because you don't use military facilities, but use the Tricare/Champus insurance, this warning is for you. As of July, Tricare/Champus insurance claims will no longer be paid unless the patient has a current ID card, even if you are using civilian facilities. In particular this might affect widows/widowers of service members or those with children (children 10 & up should have the cards). For information on the ID card facility nearest you, call 1-800-538-9552, the DEERS support line. Note to those in the DC area: Go to Ft. Belvoir, they were efficient, fast, and a real live person answers the phone. When I tried calling Roslyn & Bethesda, I got a recording for 3 weeks saying they would call me back, but never did. POST IT...near your phone, and forward to family members or friends who might be affected. * * * * * * * Where to Report Email/Web PornographyWe've probably all received them at one time or another, and pray that it never happens with our children. Those horrible x-rated emails seem to affect almost everyone online. Occasionally you can also come across a web site that wasn't what you expected. Like me, you may have wondered what you could do to stop this type of thing. The first thing you should do is report it to your internet service provider. Many have a web site specifically for this type of reporting. Then check out this page from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and click on the "Cyber Tip Line" in the top left corner of the middle screen. They tell you exactly how to report this type of thing and often you can do it online, don't delete the message until you have forwarded it on to the proper authorities. Other tips...never let your children check their email alone, if you have an email address on any web site know that there are programs that search for things like that and you will tend to receive more unsavory emails, never "unsubscribe" (you didn't subscribe to begin with & they use the unsubscribe feature to see if it is a valid address, if they hear from you they will send more...just delete once reported), be aware that sometimes it will make it sound like someone has been to an x-rated site when they have not, on the other hand, if someone in your family is frequenting these sites it will also generate additional mail (never let children go on the internet unsupervised, or "chat" with any strangers). And finally if you happen to have gotten one of those emails that actually opens right away to pornography and won't let you cancel or delete it, just log off and then delete. We have done past articles on certain providers that will filter these things, but nothing is fool-proof. POST IT...near your computer. * * * * * * * Magazines Worth the PriceI subscribe to very few magazines, but there are some that are worth recommending. First you can save a lot of money by subscribing to "Consumer Reports". They do have an online service, but it is more expensive than their magazine, and if you save your back issues and use the free consumer guides that come with the subscription, you will get almost everything available online. This magazine accepts no adverting, and I can tell you from experience, that their ratings are usually right on the mark. If you buy a car, TV, or other product that they recommend, then they may last twice as long as less reliable products. One buy alone may pay for the price of the subscription. Yes, they are available at the library, but having them on hand will make you more inclined to actually use them when making a purchase. You can also save yourself some money by getting the TV Guide, if you are still using the newspaper's TV schedule. You can get just about all your news online now and so instead of paying the money for a newspaper, just pay the smaller price (about 90 cents/week) for the TV Guide subscription. Almost all other major magazines have most of their stories online now, so you can cancel those subscriptions. Just do a search for their titles. And remember, you can usually save additional money by subscribing for the longest period of time you can. Trying to cut down on TV or certain programs? Try going through the TV Guide at the beginning of the week & circling the shows you want to watch. Then only turn it on if a circled show is on. It helps keep the channel switching to a minimum, and helps you avoid being tempted with some of the junk that passes for programming. Yes, I know that you can access TV listings online, but who wants to jump back & forth between the TV & computer, so this is one that I think is worth the cost. POST IT...near your TV, computer, or phone. * * * * * * * Recipe: Two Ingredient Biscuits (No Kidding!) - (Thank you to Connie N.)Measure 2 cups of self-rising flour into a bowl; mix in one cup of heavy/whipping cream, and gently mix until coarse crumbs appear. Gather loose dough bits into a ball and place on a flat surface sprinkled with a little flour. Knead 10 times, gathering more bits as you gently work the dough. Roll or pat about an inch thick for tall, flaky biscuits (roll to half inch for shorter biscuits) and cut with a 1 or 2-inch cutter. Bake at 450 on a lightly-greased baking sheet for 10-12 minutes. I melt a little low-fat butter on top of the biscuits just as they come hot out of the oven to soften the tops. I know heavy cream is fatty, but without the usual fat from shortening, butter, buttermilk, etc. the fat content comes out to be about the same. POST IT...on your shopping list & in your recipe box. * * * * * * * Back Issue Treasure: January 1st, 1999It's tax time again, so check out this back issue for advice on where & how to get it done. And for this year, you can get a $10 off coupon for Jackson Hewitt at and get information about the $1300 in coupons for a variety of other companies' services (Amazon, travel, computers, etc.) that you get when you have your taxes prepared at H & R Block at this web site http://www.hrblock.com/press_relations/content/pr_2001_10.html?source=pressArchive his issue also has info on keeping those January resolutions & goals...don't give up now! POST IT...by your computer. * * * * * * * Final WordsJOKE (Thanks to Cassie H.)Last night, I dreamed I was a car muffler. When I woke up, I was exhausted!
