There are a lot of weather sites out there, but I haven't found any that beat http://www.accuweather.com. Not only do they have the usual forecasts found on most weather sites, but they also have an hour by hour report, so you can see if that soccer game your child has might be cancelled. They have the Real Feel temperature, which tells you how it really FEELS after factoring in wind and/or humidity. They even have a way you can check the flu cases for your area also. So check it out and let me know what you think. POST IT...in your computer, in the yellow pages under "weather", and maybe even on your child's sports calendar. * * * * * * * New TaeKwonDo Sparring RulesI know from past contact that many of our readers participate in TaeKwonDo (Korean Martial Art). If you train in the USA & have children ages 6-11 who spar, then you need to take special note of the following info. Starting this year, the USTU has made a new rule that there will be NO head contact allowed for that age group any longer. Considering that the World TKD Federation is trying to get a new rule passed offering 2 points for every head shot, it seems ridiculous to train our youngsters NOT to kick to the head. Do they really think that after training all that time NOT to do it, that they will suddenly start doing it well at 12? Every instructor I have spoken to believes this could handicap future USA teams. If a child now kicks to the head, they will receive a warning. If you would like to complain to the USTU people who are responsible for this rule, and hopefully might change it back, you can go to their web site http://www.ustu.com/index-cu.html and email the following people...the USTU Board of Governors which consists of the USTU Officers, each of the State Presidents, and the members of the National Athletes Advisory Committee, and the USTU Executive Committee. For those of you not familiar with the sport, soft headgear is w orn, and contact to the head that caused injury was never allowed. In most cases, once a person develops the ability to kick to the head, they also can be trained to control the kick. No face contact has ever been allowed. POST IT...at your TKD schools, and pass on by email to others who may be interested. * * * * * * * Door Notes Part IIOne of our readers, Pat, wrote in with some good advice for those whose children have playmates that aren't at a reading level yet. She suggested putting a little flag outside the door either when they can play or when they cannot & teaching their children's friends to recognize the signal. A handkerchief tied to the door knob would also work. And just remember we aren't telling the kids to "GO AWAY!" :-) , we're telling them to PLEASE COME BACK at a later time. Anyone who has tried to do a homeschool lesson, or help their child with homework, only to be interrupted several times can understand. That and mothers who also have babies sleeping, sick children, or are shooting for some family time. POST IT...near your front door. * * * * * * * Saving on Cable/Satellite TVFirst, check to see what you receive with rabbit ears. Remember people got along fine for years without cable and if you live near a major city, you may be able to get all the major channels perfectly well with a little antenna. But if you do decide that you want cable just for clearer reception, let the buyer beware. Most cable/satellite companies have several contact phone numbers and there may be different offers at each number. I called 3 different numbers & checked a web site, and while they all ended up giving me the same rate for the monthly fee, one number offered the hookup at $10 LESS than the other 3 numbers. Also don't assume that the Basic Package is the cheapest one. When I asked each operator for their cheapest deal, each operator asked me, "oh, you mean our Basic Package?". I told them I wanted whatever package cost the least. Most Basic Packages are well into $30-$50 these days and offer about 100 channels. But there are packages (sometimes called Broadcast Packages) that offer 30 channels for $16 or 10 for $6. After all, do you REALLY need hundreds of channels? As my husband likes to say, when he has to stay at a motel for business & the room has cable, that with all those channels, it just takes him longer to figure out there is nothing on. Unfortunately most companies do not offer special sales on the cheapest packages, but then just think how much you will save in the long run. And if you start having problems with your cable or satellite being "out", keep a log of the hours it is out and ask for credit if it starts happening too often. Every little bit helps. POST IT...in the yellow pages under "Television-Cable". * * * * * * * Recipe: Pineapple Inside Out CakeYummy AND Easy, how could it be better? Preheat oven to 350F. Grease & flour a 10" tube pan.
