Follow the directions under "Back Issue Treasure" to retrieve lists of articles you can receive by email, or better yet, go to our Back Issues page & use the search engine to look for things that will help you in your goals. Search words to use might include the following: marriage, husband, wife, parents, exercise, habits, or similar words. If you are looking for help & aren't able to find articles that encourage you, please send me an email and I will do my best to steer you in the right direction. And a very Happy New Year to All of You! Sharon Powell, Editor make-a-note@att.net * * * * * * * Family Radio Theatre CollectionYou asked for it, and our webmaster has responded. We now have a list of all the Focus on the Family Radio Theatre productions available on our web site, both in CD & cassettes. These are outstanding performances with high quality orchestrations, sound effects, and talented actors. They seem like they just keep getting better with every new CD. If you are looking for something to listen to on those long car rides, or just for errands around town, or something to do besides sitting in front of the TV another night, just get one of these CD's and you'll be hooked. Go to our Favorite Books web page, then scroll down to Focus on the Family. If you prefer to order by phone you can call 1-800-A-Family. Newer titles include, among many others, "Les Miserables", "Voyage of the Dawn Treader", and "Ben Hur". Don't forget to give your library a call & ask them to consider carrying them also. * * * * * * * Nursing Home VisitsIf your resolution is to be of service or comfort to others, consider visiting someone in a nursing home. Many nursing homes have activities where they encourage the general public to participate, and/or opportunities for volunteer work. Ask the nurses which patient seems to have the least visitors, & just go introduce yourself. A recent study of terminally ill patients found that they were only in contact with another human being for 70 min a day, and that INCLUDES staff. I doubt whether most nursing homes would be much better. Imagine how you would feel if YOU were the one waiting for someone who cares to stop by & visit. Make it a family activity; most nursing home patients love seeing young people around. POST IT...on your calendar. * * * * * * * Best Pregnancy & Childbirth BooksIn my opinion, you can throw out all the other pregnancy & childbirth books, and just keep these two. The first is called "Pregnancy & Childbirth" by Hotchner, et.al. This is a great reference book for ladies who are expecting & covers just about everything imaginable. The second book is more technical, but is a summary of all the studies done on pregnancy & childbirth called "A Guide to Effective Care in Pregnancy & Childbirth" by Keirse, et.al. It might be a little more difficult reading & is a little pricier. I recommend that you buy the first book so that you can have it on hand for reference throughout your pregnancy. Unless you come from a medical background & have an interest, then why not see if you local library will buy the second book for their stacks & you can borrow it if a particular issue arises. POST IT...in any pregnancy book you have, or in the yellow pages under OB/GYN. * * * * * * * Recipe: BJ's FudgeOkay, throw out the old fudge recipe that I included in a past issue. THIS recipe is the one you should replace it with. When I brought some of the old recipe to my friend Debbie D., and then I tried some of her fudge at a church function...well, let's just say I was a little embarrassed at the difference in quality. She was kind enough to give her permission for me to share it with you. This is the kind your grandmother used to make. So give it a try... Put 3C sugar, 3/4C margarine, and 2/3C evaporated milk (about 1/2 can) in pan & bring to boil, stirring constantly. Boil 5 min. over med. heat, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in 12 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips (also great with the Hershey's Raspberry flavored chocolate chips) till melted. Add 7 oz jar of marshmallow cream, 1 tsp. vanilla, and 1C chopped nuts (optional) & beat/stir until well blended. Pour into well greased 9x13 pan. Cool to room temp. & then cut into squares. POST IT...in your recipe box & on your shopping list. * * * * * * * Back Issue Treasure: June 14th, 1997 IssueIf you haven't sprung for the newest mildew-free shower curtains, check out this issue for an easy tip on cleaning the mildew off your shower curtain. Valentine's Day isn't far away so you might want to find out who to call to save money for florists, and what secret ingredient to ask for when you order balloons. For our readers in the Southern Hemisphere, you can read some tips on avoiding heat injuries. Flag desserts aren't just for the 4th of July anymore, so look no farther than this issue for one that will be a hit. Just click on this date June 14th, 1997 to get the goods on all of the above. * * * * * * * Final WordsJOKE (From Paul H.)First, a big thank you to all the readers who shared your best with me. I may have to do an all joke issue (April Fools' Day??:-) to get them all in. But here is the first among many. "Did you here about the man who slept under his car last night? He wanted to get up oily (early)." :-) QUOTE (From Bob A.)"The whole challenge of life is to act with honor and hope and generosity, no matter what you've drawn. You can't help when or what you were born, you may not be able to help how you die; but you can - and you should - try to pass the time in between as a good man...." --Anton Myrer, from "Once An Eagle" * * * * * * * Sponsorship InformationIf you are interested in helping to sponsor our ezine, or others in the Dollar Stretcher family, drop an email requesting additional info to: mailto:marketing@stretcher.com?subject=MAN.
