Prentiss Books

As many of our readers have already discovered in "Stepping Heavenward"  Elizabeth Prentiss was a woman made for encouragement, esp. to wives, mothers, & daughters. One of our readers, Nancy E., was kind enough to inform us that AB Publishing has just recently begun to reproduce quite a few of the Prentiss books that were out of print. They can be purchased through Christian Book Distributors (http://www.christianbook.com). I would especially recommend "The Home at Greylock" to those of you who enjoyed "Stepping Heavenward". What "Stepping" was to being a wife, I believe that "Greylock" is to being a mother. Enjoy.

Dog Problems?

Does your dog seem to have unrelated health problems that never go away? Things like red spots, recurring ear infections, scratching, & vomiting? Our dog did & due to an illness where he was restricted to simply chicken & rice, we found out that the other symptoms WERE related & caused by a food allergy, probably to corn meal, in his case. Once he was on the straight chicken & rice, the other symptoms disappeared within just 2-3 days. So if your dog has problems that seem to never get better, check with your vet. In our case, the vet told us to try 1 part chicken to 2 parts rice for about a week. But they cannot stay on this forever, they need to get back on a regular dog food that doesn't have the offending ingredient. There is testing available, but it is very expensive, and if the symptoms are obvious, then you will see very quickly if they come back. Some breeds have more problems with allergies than others. Some ingredients seem to trigger more allergies than others. For more information go to http://www.k9web.com/dog-faqs/medical/canine-allergies.html.  And if you need any other pet items, don't forget that we recommend Jeffers Pet Supply, the best prices & service around.

Late Talking Children

Do you have a child, probably a boy, who is/was a late talker? But did he show strong signs of brightness in other areas? There are some children who have problems that do require intervention, and yet a significant number of these children have what is known as the Einstein Syndrome. They are simply bright children who talk late. Many are labeled autistic or developmentally delayed, and put in special classes that bore them & hold them back. And even the "experts" sometimes head in the wrong direction. If you think you have a child like this, I urge you to get Thomas Sowell's book, "The Einstein Syndrome: Bright Children Who Talk Late".  I only wish this book had been around 10 yrs ago when my son was first being "evaluated" for his late talking. When I read this material I literally cried with relief, that everything that I already knew deep down about my son, was right there in black & white. His first book on the subject, "Late Talking Children", is more a collection of anecdotal stories & statistics, but still well worth the read. If someone you know has a late talker, tell them about this book. If someone you love is a late talker read this book. Some children are just on a different timetable, and it doesn't mean there's anything "wrong" with them.

Attorney Check Sites

If you are looking for an attorney, then you might want to check out this web site http://www.abanet.org/cpr/disciplinary.html.  It has each state's disciplinary divisions and many of the web sites it will link you to can provide information on disciplinary action taken against attorneys in the state. If you have trouble finding it, use the phone numbers to call & find out if there is a place where you can call or look online for the info. It is usually there, just not in a highly visible location.

Recipe: Christmas Candy Gifts

Okay the kids are out of school and complaining of being "booooored", so what do you do (that's assuming that you haven't already printed out a copy of Deborah Taylor-Hough's "200 plus Ideas for Summertime or Anytime Fun!" for each child at http://hometown.aol.com/dsimple/200ideas1.html)? With a bag full of individually wrapped candies, a box of straight pins (obviously these ideas are for older kids), and a Styrofoam form, you can keep them busy for quite a while making some beautiful decorations or hostess gifts. You can get the Styrofoam wreaths, cones (trees), or balls. Then use the straight pins to attach the candy paper ends to the form. Can you picture a tree shaped cone covered with the Christmas wrapped Hershey Kisses candies? Or how about a wreath covered with round peppermints? If a ball shape is used, it can be turned into an ornament.

POST IT...on your shopping list & write it on the "200 plus" list if you have it. :-)
