Easy Holiday Craft

A BIG thank you to Ruth L. for sharing this craft with us. Unfortunately the book it was in is out of print, so we'll give you the best instruction we can with our limited space. Get a box of medium sized plain colored glass ball ornaments. Use craft glue (Tacky Glue) to attach each ball to an ice cream cone of your choice (plain, sugar, or waffle) with the hanger at the top. Do NOT use a glue gun, the heat will tend to crack the balls. Once the glue dries, drizzle white acrylic paint on top of the colored balls, but be sure that the color is still showing. The white should look a bit like syrup on a cone & it doesn't hurt if it runs down the cone a bit. Once it has dried a little bit, sprinkle on Christmas colored sprinkles like you would put on cookies (glitter might also work well). Let dry & hang out of reach of hungry pets or small children. They really turn out beautifully & if sprayed with lacquer & wrapped carefully, might even last more than a year. Ruth also had the mess reducing idea of hanging the ornaments on a string across a box before drizzling the paint or sprinkling the cones.

Free Flight for Kids

If you have a child age 8-17, you can arrange for them to have a free demonstration flight on a plane (usually small personal prop planes). The Young Eagles Program is designed to introduce young people to aviation. The pilot will usually talk to the kids about the plane, aeronautical charts/reference points, preflight inspections, instrument panels, & the parts of the plane. While the flight is usually a one day event, there are also summer programs available at their headquarters. The flights can be found all over the country. For more info on scheduling a flight go to

or call (920)426-4831. What a great Christmas idea.

Father-Daughter Valentine (Yes, Valentine) Dance

Okay, you may think this is way too early to start thinking about Valentine's Day, but it is only a couple of months away and this is a great program to start looking at NOW. The idea of this project is to encourage fathers to spend time with their daughters in a bit more formal setting. After all, the example of the father will often guide the girls in their choice of a future husband. These dances have been put on by PTA's, churches, and many other groups. For girls without fathers, volunteers within the group are sought to fill in. These dances can be as simple or fancy, as you like. For more information go to

http://www.fatherdaughterdance.com

 or Email

GLVY77A@prodigy.net

or call (413)447-9907. You can purchase ($8.50) a guide to putting the dance together & publicizing it. If you get the material & read through it, I really think you will be sold. This program has touched a lot of hearts & become a tradition in many cities.

"Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me!"

This is the clever name of a wonderful National Public Radio Program on current events. I have listened to their one hour program on two occasions, & snippets on other days and haven't heard anything that wouldn't be fine for the whole family. With an entertaining mix of games, call in contestants, humor, and talented commentators who can really think on the run, you find yourself getting educated and laughing out loud at the same time. It is an hour show that usually airs Saturday or Sunday. If you enjoy intelligent humor, this is a show for you. For more information on the station & time nearest you, or to listen to it online, go to

Recipe: California Chicken

For those of you who are tired of all the rich, filling food of the holidays, here's a recipe that will lighten things up, but still tastes great. Combine 2 tbsp. lemon juice, 1 tbsp. oil, 1 tbsp. water, 1 tsp. garlic salt (adjust to taste), 1/2 tsp. basil leaves, & 1/2 tsp. onion powder. Brush over 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Sauté in nonstick skillet until lightly browned & no longer pink in center.

Back Issue Treasure: December 16th, 1997 Issue (Organize for the New Year, Marriage Saver, Thank You's, & Decluttering)

This back issue is one of my favorites, packed with lot of helpful info. Check the article on New Year Preparations to make 2002 your most organized year ever with a very simple tool. A suggestion that has been a big hit with husbands & wives, our "Marriage Saver" article. Also articles on thank you's, tipping, decluttering kids' toys (perfect time of year to do this), and a joke & a quote designed to encourage you during this busy time & keep things in perspective too. So check out the December 16th, 1997.

Final Words

JOKE (From Kyong D. :-)

It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the station. As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and I saw a little boy staring in at me. "Is that a dog you got back there?" he asked. "It sure is," I replied. Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, "What'd he do?"
