Early to Rise

Many of us try so hard to get up early, whether to get a jump on the day, do our quiet time, or exercise. Unfortunately many of us fail & hit that snooze button. After our recent move I found that I had no trouble at all getting up a little before 6am in our new home. What is my secret? No window coverings yet. When that sun comes up the room is bright &, at least in my case, I cannot sleep with all that light. So if you are having trouble getting up earlier, try opening your curtains just before you go to sleep. If this is not an option for security reasons, then you might consider buying sheers to put under your curtains so that you have some privacy, but still have the light. POST IT...by your alarm clock.

"What's for Dinner Mom?"

Just when I think I can't find a cookbook with a new & different angle, one comes across my desk & surprises me. This cookbook is packed with lots of very practical tips for every day families. The first half of the book has ideas for what I call "mini-bulk" cooking. Suggestions to make it easy to prepare a few meals ahead of time, rather than do all your cooking for a month. This book is a good one for those who fall somewhere between big time bulk cooking and last minute cooking. But I think the thing I like the most about it, is that it encourages creative thinking. Practically every recipe (the second half of the book) has little comments from the testers or author making suggestions for little adjustments or short cuts. However, I think I got more out of the first part. One simple suggestion is just making a double recipe once in a while when you make a meal, eat one & freeze one. It is also sprinkled with entertaining anecdotes & observations, for example, did you know that Jesus did his own form of bulk cooking (loaves & the fish). :-) But even if you never cook ahead, I think there is still plenty in the book to make it worth your while to check out. It sells for $14.95 plus shipping. To order or get more info you can email TEACHmagazine@integrityol.com. One of the recipes is included below in our recipe section. POST IT...on your shopping list.

Glucosamine/Joint Help Update

For those of you with joint pain who have learned the joys of the Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplement (see our May 1st, 1999 issue-Back Issue Instructions below), here's one way to save some money on your supply. One of the most popular & least expensive brands (also tested & approved by the author of "The Arthritis Cure" http://www.drtheo.com)is Sundown's "Osteo-Bi-Flex". They now have an "Ambassadors Club" you can sign up for to receive joint help updates AND money-saving coupons. Usually their bottles have a $5 off coupon enclosed, so this is icing on the cake. This brand is widely available in most drug stores, Wal-Mart, and military commissaries. To sign up go to http://www.osteobiflex.com and click on the Ambassadors Club logo. For our email only members you can send your name, address, birthday, phone #, email address, & how long you have been taking the supplement...to sign up, to: OSTEO-BI-FLEX AMBASSADORS CLUB OFFER, P O BOX 9772, CLINTON IOWA 52736-9772. So if your joints are giving you trouble, check it out! POST IT...near your computer.

Moving List Update/Additions

Our (Ultimate) Moving Checklist on our web site is definitely one of our most popular pages, especially at this time of the year. Every move we learn something new & this recent move for us was no exception. So here are a few items to add to any list you have already printed out & we hope to add to the official list soon (after we finish putting everything away). Now let's say you DON'T want to wake up at dawn (see article above) and you have no curtains. Use the packing paper sheets that the movers use to wrap things. You will have plenty of it on hand, it can be smoothed out & taped on the windows, provide privacy & some heat protection, while still being thin enough to let light in. It is an easy way to handle the problem until you can get around to the window treatments. Another benefit to notifying the post office of your change of address has surfaced. Not only will this get your mail where it needs to be, but now the post office sends a complete packet of info & coupons to you. It confirms your new address, tells you how to register to vote in your area, how to change your drivers' license/car registrations, community resources, who your government representatives are, & much more. The coupons offer significant savings for some businesses (10% off total purchases at Sears/Home Depot...blinds or curtains anyone?), free video rental, free key made, and more. The stores probably vary depending on the area. But IF I decided to do my whole house in blinds the Home Depot coupon alone could save me $200! Another good thing to do is have the fire marshal come out & do a courtesy inspection of the home for tips on safety & placement of detectors. Our inspector also suggested calling the local NON-emergency fire dept. # during a slow time & ask if you can check your 911 access. If they say yes, then you hang up & dial 911 & they will confirm that your name, address, & phone all pop up in case you have to call in a real emergency. In our case it did not, probably because it is a newer area, but they said to check back in a couple of weeks & they should have the info in the system. Correction-Blood Donations

Rick M. was kind enough to point out an error in last month's article on donating blood. You cannot donate monthly, there needs to be at least 56 days between donations, with exceptions in certain circumstances (usually related to blood needed during your own surgery). Thanks for keeping us on our toes, Rick. POST IT...with the other article.

Recipe: Alfredo Sauce (from "What's for Dinner, Mom?" cookbook-condensed for space)

Served over vegetables or noodles, it's so good. Melt 1 stick (1/2C) butter in a pan over low heat. Add 1pt half & half & 2 cloves crushed garlic, & increase heat to medium. Whisk in 2-3 tblsp cornstarch a little at a time, stirring constantly until thickened, adding more cornstarch if needed. Add 1/4C grated parmesan cheese, stir, & keep warm until ready to serve. Patty (tester) says: "Byron loved this sauce, topped with parmesan cheese." Karen (tester) says: "This is absolutely delicious. I love alfredo & this was some of the best I've ever eaten." POST IT...in your recipe box.

Back Issue Treasure: February 21st, 2001 Issue (Moving Tips Alert, Pet Products, Date Coffee Cake recipe, etc.)

This is the issue that had the original article on our Ultimate Moving Checklist, which really speaks for itself. I get a lot of feedback from people who said the list made their move a lot easier. There is also info on inexpensive, yet very effective pet remedies for fleas & ear infections. We recommend three books in the issue, one a book for wives to improve their marriage, & the other two are dessert & bread cookbooks that use only juice & fruit to sweeten things, no sugar, no artificial sweeteners. We even included a recipe for their Date Coffee Cake (no one will believe it is sugar free!). So check it out.  POST IT...by your computer.

Final Words

JOKE (From "What's For Dinner, Mom?")

"A recent issue of Reader's Digest shares about a little girl who was learning to double a recipe for the first time. Her mother had carefully stressed the fact that EVERYTHING should be doubled. Imagine the mother's relief when her daughter asked her before putting the cookies in the oven if she was to bake them at 650 degrees. After all, she did say to double everything."

QUOTE (From TEACH magazine, Spring 2001, Vol. V, Issue 1)

"You can do so much good, that it's bad."

--Nancy Nolan (Mother of author of "What's for Dinner, Mom?". The author, Lori Flem, says that she doesn't ever remember her mother being too busy to read her a story.)
