Gel & Other Candle Dangers

It is the time of summer parties & what makes a nicer atmosphere than candles, IF you are safe. Harriett S. was kind enough to alert me to the dangers of the newest craze...gel candles. These candles are beautiful, but sometimes the glass that contains them is not made strong enough to handle the heat & they can break apart & spray gel causing fires. If you use this type of candle, try to only burn it for a couple of hours at a time. For more info on this particular candle go to http://www.snopes2.com/toxins/gel.htm You have also probably seen the warning about lead in candle wicks, these are very rare in the USA, but it is very easy to see the metal stem in the wick if you want to check your candle. You should NEVER leave a candle burning unattended or move a hot container before it has had a chance to cool off. Make sure the candle is completely isolated from anything that could catch fire. I have personally been in homes where a bathroom candle set dried flowers on fire, and another where a candle in a living room set silk ivy & then curtains on fire, all in just a few seconds. Don't make the mistake of thinking it will never happen to you. Be safe. POST IT...near your matches or lighters.

VIN Etching for Free

Debi C., a reader in Florida, was kind enough to give us an update for the article on VIN etching (check out our June 15th, 2000 back issue). If you get VIN etching done on your car, most insurance companies will give you a discount on your auto insurance (if they don't, you might want to check with major insurers like Geico or USAA to save on your premiums). If you use the kit I recommend in the back issue it runs about $25, to get it done by a garage it usually runs a lot more. But Debi informs us that the DMV in Florida will do it at their regional offices for free. Law enforcement agencies also will do it for free in some areas. It usually cannot be done in colder weather, so this is a good time to check with your local or state law enforcement agencies (military police will also do it in some areas), or DMV to see if you can get it done for free. POST IT...by your phone.

Centipede Grass Extender

If you are one of the thousands of people who enjoy a lawn of centipede grass, here is a tip if you would like to extend it a little faster. Take a shovel and push it straight down into the grass about 4" from the edge of the grass where you would like it to extend. When you do this, it will cut the roots on that side & the grass will tend to redirect its growth towards the opposite edge. We've been able to extend our grass more than a foot a year doing this 2-3 times a year, so if you do it every other month it might grow even faster. POST IT...near your garden tools or in your gardening book.

Medical Record Book

Okay, I'll admit that when I first encountered this product, I thought to myself, well, if I have medical records at a physician's what do I need this for? Then in a short time I was trying to remember medical history for an insurance form, and then was trying to collect medical records from various physicians before a move. It really opened my eyes to the need for such a record to keep at home. But it is important to keep up with the record keeping, otherwise, it is just another book on your shelf. Also probably a good idea to have a different book for each member of the family. I used to work as a medical secretary & the author even came up with categories that I hadn't thought of. For more information go to http://www.randominspirations.com OR e-mail dianne@randominspirations.com OR phone (888)547-2389, (709)547-2389. The book is called... "Your Personal Medical Journal" & has sections on a variety of medical info to help your doctor AND your family get you the best care possible. Runs about $15 depending on postage to your area. POST IT...near your medical info books.

Recipe: Red, White, & Blue Creativity

This isn't so much a recipe as encouragement to get those creative juices flowing. So you have a 4th of July party to attend and you are supposed to be bringing something yummy, but don't have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen. Let your imagination go. First make a list of red, white, & blue things that you have on hand or can get with a quick run to the store. Possibilities include: blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, Jell-O, whipped topping (whipped topping in a tub can even be colored with food coloring), M & M's, Lifesavers, white chocolate chips, mints, marshmallows, vanilla pudding, Skittles, Fruit Roll Up Candies, certain grapes, and more. Then use your imagination. Layer sweet things to make red, white & blue layers. Pour them over pound cake, mix white chocolate chips & blueberries into red jello. Mix things into easy cookie mixes, cake/brownie mixes, or into a bread machine. Use food coloring to tint something you are making. Create an original for your family, or maybe it will become a family tradition. Get the kids in on it. Be Brave! :-) POST IT...on the fridge.

Final Words

JOKE (w/Permission of Fayetteville Observer Columnist Jim Pettit)

"When Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, he had trouble selling it. To promote his idea, he decided to tour the country installing lights in different towns. Edison stopped by an Oklahoma Indian reservation. After much thought, the tribe’s chief decided that he wanted lights in his outhouse for ease in nighttime use. This made Edison the first man to wire a head for a reservation!"
