Swim Goggles for Kids

You may have struggled as I have to find goggles for those swim lessons that actually fit the kids' faces AND keep the water out of their eyes. A common sight at most any lessons are the kids trying to adjust or empty their goggles instead of actually getting to the swimming. I finally asked the head instructor if she could recommend any particular goggles for smaller faces. She told us about Femme Petite goggles by TYR. They are designed for smaller faces, have anti-fog lenses, softer plastic to better seal out the water, and UV Screen protection. But best of all, they actually work! Now they are a little pricier than those discount brands. But how many discount brands have you gone through when an $8 pair of TYR Femme Petite's would have done it to begin with? Available at Sports Authority among other stores. POST IT...with your swim gear.

Give Longer Life to That Transmission

This is for all our readers who have manual transmissions or know someone who does. Take it from the truckers, there are ways to prolong the life of your manual transmissions. Most important of all is not rushing your shifts. Most people only take (literally) a second to shift. Practically before they have the clutch in, they are already shifting immediately out of the gear & into another, almost before their foot starts releasing the clutch. If you switch to a "4 SECOND" shift, this will help cut down on wear & tear on the transmission by giving the engine time to slow down a bit before you engage the gear/shift. So try this... Clutch(in)-Thousand (or Mississippi if you prefer :-), Shift(out)-Thousand, Shift(in)-Thousand, Clutch(out)-Thousand. Most people I know have been able to switch to this longer shifting in no time at all. Also, avoid resting your hand on the gear shift unless you are shifting, this also can lead to additional wearing. POST IT...on your dashboard.

Donors/Transplants

Many people dream about being a hero & rescuing someone, but they may be overlooking a very real way to accomplish that feat. When you donate blood or plasma you are truly saving lives. You can donate blood Rick M. was kind enough to point out an error in last month's article on donating blood. You can donate blood every 56 days, with exceptions in certain circumstances (usually related to blood needed during your own surgery), and plasma weekly (& often can get paid for the latter). With the new blood guidelines going into effect eliminating many donors due to European connections, there is more need than ever before. You can also be tested to be a bone marrow donor, which just involves a simple blood draw & then in the rare chance you are a match, blood is drawn from your hip bone while you are "sleeping" & you wake up just feeling like you bumped a table a little too hard, but may save a life. And be sure you sign up to be a organ donor on your license & let your family know your wishes. By the time all the organs are used, a single person's sacrifice could save 6 lives & give sight to another. Be a hero and encourage those around you to do the same, you never know if someone might save your life some day. For more info go to http://www.transweb.org  POST IT...near your license.

Movie Mistakes

This is a entertaining site to visit just for fun. The webmaster collects trivia on mistakes made in movies. For example, did you notice the motor vehicles in the background in certain scenes in "Braveheart" and "Last of the Mohicans"? Check it out at http://www.movie-mistakes.com And let them know about mistakes YOU have caught. POST IT...near your computer.

Recipe: Inexpensive Fall Apart Pot Roasts

This isn't so much a recipe as a method that produces delicious, super tender pot roasts from even the most inexpensive cuts. Buy a pot roast of your choice, but try to find the cheapest one in the size you think you will need. Rinse the roast off & make cuts on both sides in a criss-cross pattern. Sprinkle on a generous amount of garlic powder and seasoning salt on both sides. Place in a large pot on the stovetop, w/the burner set on high. Brown thoroughly on both sides. Then sprinkle a package of onion soup mix over the top of the roast and add enough water to almost completely cover the roast. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer, cover and let simmer for several hours. Usually I start the roast about noon, turn it over in the water about 3pm, and then take it out to eat about 6pm. If you like, you can also add potatoes or carrots to the pot about an hour before the roast is done, bring to a boil & then back to a simmer. Drain off the water (or use to make gravy) and serve. POST IT...in your recipe box.

Final Words

JOKE (From "New Horizons" magazine)

"When asked for prayer requests one evening, our 4-yr-old son John said, "Let's pray for all those green pastors." My husband & I asked him what he meant. "You know", he replied, "like in the Psalm. 'The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastors.'"

QUOTE

"People ask me how it happens that my children are all so promptly obedient & so happy. As if it chanced that some parents have such children or chanced that some have not! I am afraid it is only too true, as someone has remarked, that 'this is the age of obedient parents!' What then will be the future of their children? How can they yield to God who have never been taught to yield to human authority? And how well fitted will they be to rule their own households who have never learned to rule themselves?" ---Mrs. E. Prentiss, "Stepping Heavenward", published in...are you ready?...1869. A book that this editor HIGHLY recommends to all women in particular.
