Water Choices - Part II

Well, our water article from our last issue (May 16th, 2001) generated a good amount of feedback. I felt some of it was worth repeating. Brenda M. wrote that we should also consider the impact on the environment. The production of plastic bottles that not only will eventually end up in land fills, but also the energy & by products produced in their manufacture. Joyce H. pointed out that just because it is bottled doesn't mean you are getting spring water, some are from municipal sources & have just been put through additional filtering. In other words, be sure to check the labels if you go the bottled water route. POST IT...in your phone book under water companies.

Cholesterol Myths?

Recently the articles of a medical doctor/researcher came to my attention. At first I was very skeptical, because what he writes about goes against "conventional medical wisdom." However, once I saw that he had had articles published in respected medical journals, and what he had to say seemed to make sense & was well documented...well, I felt it was worth sharing with you. If you are interested in reading a different perspective on the whole danger of high cholesterol check out this site at http://www.ravnskov.nu/cholesterol.htm. You can click on the point numbers on the site to get more detailed info on each point. Remember that until just a few years ago, they didn't know that most stomach ulcers are caused by bacteria and the researcher who promoted the idea was ridiculed for years until it was proven. Now the entire treatment of ulcers has changed. But remember all medical decisions should be discussed with your health care professionals. POST IT...near your computer.

New Calcium Supplement

Most of our readers know how important it is to get enough calcium (if not, just check out our January 1st, 1999 Issue). However, many of the calcium supplements tend to cause certain digestive discomfort that I won't go into. If you've tried them & had problems, then you know what I am talking about. Milk, esp. skim, is one of the best ways to get calcium. But if you aren't able to drink enough there is a new supplement on the market that doesn't seem to cause the digestive problems the older supplements can. It is call Viactiv and is in the form of a soft chew, about the size of a caramel. Each chew has 500mg of calcium, along with vitamins that help your body absorb the calcium better. So if you had problems with supplements before, check with your doctor about giving this one a try, & keep those bones strong. It comes in a variety of flavors, & so far every box I purchased had a new coupon in it to use with the next box. For more info, you can check out their web site at http://www.viactiv.com.  POST IT...near your vitamins.

POW Bracelet Info Site

For those of you who wore POW bracelets at one time or another, or continue to do so (there are a lot of men unaccounted for & evidence that some of them still might be out there), here is a site to get more info on the name on the bracelet. You can look up the man on your bracelet, get a little biography, and also more info on how he was captured & what happened to him. Some of the files also contain photos. Makes it a little more personal. Check it out at http://www.pownetwork.org/bios.htm. POST IT...near your computer & forward to others who might have worn a bracelet.

Recipe: Easy Flavored Iced Teas

These days flavored iced tea has become very popular. The only problem is that most of the commercial flavored teas or concentrates are expensive & loaded with sugar. Instead of spending all that money, the next time you make your iced tea, throw in a couple of herbal tea bags with your favorite flavoring. Popular ones are raspberry, orange, and lemon. You'll get your regular tea with a nice flavor to go with it, but not all the sugar & money wasted on store bought flavored tea. For an easy way to make iced tea using your microwave, check out our July 15, 1999 issue. POST IT...on your shopping list.

Back Issue Treasure: Three to Remember (Inexpensive Flea Control, Easy Tick Remover, and Vacation Bible School Publicity, and more)

This issue I couldn't pick just one. Too many reader requests for back issues that were definitely appropriate to this time of year. So if you are looking for a time table & ideas of how to publicize your Vacation Bible School (although ideas would go for just about any function), check out our June 1, 1999 issue. Want an easy way to get those ticks off man & beast without resorting to any chemicals or matches? Check out the Tick Off Spoon in the February 15, 1999 issue. This last one was very recent, but I have had several people ask me about it now that flea season has begun...check out our February 21, 2001 issue for an inexpensive alternative to all the flea spot on & pill treatments.  POST IT...by your computer.

Final Words

JOKE (Quote from Sit-Com)

For all of those protective parents of teenage daughters out there, who will understand the humor in this quote... "Baby, for the rest of your life there's going to be boys on this planet, and a lot of them are going to want to kiss you. Unfortunately I won't be able to kill them all."
