Easter Egg Hunts

If you are planning or need to supply goodies for one, here are some tips for you. Try to have separate sections for different age children. The younger sections will have eggs in plain site, older children may have them well hidden. Limit the number of eggs the kids can find, so that one child doesn't end up with a basketful & another with only 2, & plan for that number of eggs (an easy way to do it is to have the parents bring a number of filled eggs for each child & mix them all up before hiding them). Tell the kids to stop after they reach the limit number. Have one "golden" egg that will bring a gift to whoever finds it. If filling the eggs yourself or if the parents are bringing them, make these suggestions: avoid common allergens like chocolate, peanut products, coconut, & nuts; buy individually wrapped candies; and tape the eggs to avoid spills. Don't fill with fruit/nuts unless everyone is doing it, kids will be disappointed if everyone else is getting candy. Consider filling the eggs with small toys for older kids (w/young children this could pose a choking problem). If you are looking for something more meaningful to put into the eggs, many Christian stores now carry individually wrapped mint candies w/Bible verses on the wrappers, they are called "Testa-Mints". As the children come out of the hunt area, make sure they have the correct number of eggs, if they have too many, be sure to pass them on to the kids who don't have enough. Holiday Air Travel Helps

If you are traveling by air during the spring holidays, or at ANY time for that matter, this is an article that you do NOT want to miss. Dateline NBC did a great piece on this subject with wonderful suggestions for getting the info you need, avoiding hassles, and what you are entitled to if anything goes wrong in your schedule. In the article, they also have links to a web site where you can actually see graphics of the planes in flight (great for those waiting for the travelers - http://www.trip.com then click on "FlightTRACKER"), and a travelers' rights web site (http://www.mytravelrights.com then click on "Rule 240"). There are federal regulations that govern what they can & can't do to you with regards to overbooking, bumping, & rescheduling. May I also suggest checking the airlines own site (the travelers' rights site has links to the major ones) for what they offer. Recently a family member flew on a major airline & the flight was delayed. The gate clerk said the plane was in the air & should be there soon. I called the 800 number & found out the plane was still on the ground at the previous location. Often the gate clerks just don't know (so don't yell at them:-). We also found that if he missed his connection flight they were required to put him in a 1st Class seat if they had no coach available, & that he was due a phone card if his connection was more than 45 min late. Go to this article, read it, print out the info before you fly so that you have it on hand to show the gate clerks if you are due any special services. They won't present them to you unless you ASK. So get the scoop at http://www.msnbc.com/news/541162.asp POST IT...in the yellow pages under travel agent (still usually cheaper to book than online) and in your computer bookmarks.

Time to Buy a Meat Freezer?

Now whenever someone goes making a prediction there is always a chance they could be wrong, so consider this advice at your own risk & please don't go into debt if you DO decide to take it. :-) If you have been considering getting a big freezer, now may be the time to do it. With the outbreak of diseased cattle on all but two continents, it seems like it would have an impact on the price of meat. The prices of beef on the affected continents will go up as it becomes more scarce, & the unaffected areas may also have a rise as the affected areas offer to pay more for the imported beef. As beef becomes more scarce, that will probably increase the demand & prices for poultry as more people buy the latter. So this might be a good time to buy that freezer & stock up before prices go up. Again, this is NOT professional advice, just the opinion of a layperson. POST IT...on your shopping list?

Popular Home Learning Curriculum

To add a bit to our last issue's home learning focus...here are the programs that have remained popular for many years now. When programs stand the test of time for this long, it is usually a very good sign.  Beginning Reading - "Sing, Spell, Read & Write" (on the other hand, I have heard a LOT of negative feedback about another heavily advertised phonics program), Reading - McGuffey Readers, Math - Saxon books for any grade, History - Greenleaf Press Books, Foreign Language - The Learnables (http://www.learnables.com). One of the best places to get the lowest prices (& great service) on products like this is from the Christian Book Distributors (CBD) company (http://www.christianbook.com or 1-978-977-5045). The only reason we link you to Amazon for more info, rather than CBD is that we seem to have problems using the CBD links in the ezine. POST IT...on your shopping list.

Recipe: Resurrection Rolls

Great idea for kids for Easter. INGREDIENTS: 1 pkg. crescent rolls, large marshmallows, melted butter, cinnamon sugar. Preheat oven to 350º F. Give each child a crescent roll triangle to represent the cloth Jesus was wrapped in. Give each child 1 marshmallow to represent Jesus (our sweet Savior). Have child dip marshmallow into melted butter (represents embalming oils). Next roll the marshmallow in cinnamon sugar (represents spices used to anoint the body). Wrap the coated marshmallow tightly in the crescent roll. Seal edges (represents wrapping of Jesus' body after death). Place in the oven for 10-12 minutes (oven represents the tomb). Allow to cool. Child will find roll is puffed up, but empty. He is RISEN!! POST IT...in your recipe box & on your shopping list. NOTE: Also check out our April 1st, 1998 issue for a recipe for a similar recipe for Easter Story Cookies OR our March 16th, 1999 issue for Do It Yourself Resurrection Eggs (see directions for retrieving back issues below.).

Final Words

JOKE (from Focus on the Family magazine, used with permission http://www.fotf.org)

The noise coming from the kitchen was deafening! It sounded like the cabinets had fallen off the wall, breaking the dishes inside. Our family ran, afraid, in that direction. We encountered our dog, Friday, hysterically running around the kitchen with the full bottom rack of the dishwasher attached to his dog collar. As he ran yelping, dishes flew everywhere. Friday had been licking food off recently loaded plates when his collar got hooked around a piece of the dishwasher rack. When he tried to get away, the whole rack went with him. Friday was overwhelmed with panic by the time we stopped him. He doesn't go near the open dishwasher anymore.
