Occasion Reminders for You OR Your Business

Here's an idea that can help an individual, and/or also help your business. If you are always forgetting birthdays, anniversaries, or other special occasions help is on the way. There are several web sites where you can go & sign up for email reminder services. http://www.eorganizer.com, http://www.memotome.com, http://www.hallmark.com, and http://www.proflowers.com. I found the Proflowers site to be the easiest place to sign up. On the Hallmark site I gave up after 10 different passwords I tried to use came back as already taken. If you are on email only, don't despair, Occasions Gift Baskets will provide the same service by phone, fax, email, or snail mail. They can be reached at (800)723-7646, (910)426-9988, OccasionsGiftBaskets@prodigy.net, or by writing to Occasions Gift Baskets, P. O. Box 48367, Cumberland, NC 28331-9900. Just ask for their Occasion Reminder Form. You are not obligated to purchase anything from the services like Hallmark, Proflowers, or Occasions Gift Baskets, although they all have wonderful gift possibilities.  Occasions Gift Baskets ships anywhere in the world that UPS goes. Now, how can this help your business? If you have a business selling items that might be bought as gifts, why not start your own reminder service? This could apply to Avon, Longaberger, Tupperware, or other home businesses. Think about the business it might bring in. POST IT...by your computer, and/or with your business papers.

Book Menders

Ann & Tom Bellino, The Bookmenders, have a wonderful service. If you have a Bible, or other treasured book that is falling apart, they can repair, recover, & restore them to a usable condition. But not only do they provide this service for a fee, but they also provide FREE brochures for churches on "How to Care for Your Bible". This little brochure tells you the best way to clean pages, refasten loose pages, fix torn pages, and more. But if you can't do it yourself, then you can always send it to The Bookmenders. For more information go to http://www.bookmenders.com (they were having a little trouble w/their site at press time, but you can always contact them by email or phone), bookmenders@bcg.net, 1-501-787-6326, FAX 1-501-787-5392. POST IT...in the front cover of your favorite Bible.

Tooth Brush Substitutes

I wish I had had this info when I first got braces & my mom made me brush my teeth at school after lunch. If your kids are similarly embarrassed, or if you don't feel like whipping out the old bristles at work, there are some things you can eat & do to cut down on cavities without brushing. Drink tea, or finish your meal with a piece of cheese, both contain ingredients that help fight the bacteria that can cause cavities. Chew gum after a meal (okay, this probably isn't a good one for students), preferably sugar-free, but without artificial sweeteners. My friend's dentist recommended gum w/xylitol. The chewing action stimulates saliva production, which also works on getting rid of the bacteria. If all else fails, just take a clean napkin and run it over your teeth after a meal to get the worst of the residue. Of course, I will admit, my mom was right, brushing is still the best. POST IT...where you keep your lunch money, or lunch sacks.

"Junkyard Wars" - A TV Program Recommendation

Now I think this may be a first, but I am about to recommend a TV program. I caught part of the program at a friend's house (we don't have cable, although this show makes me wish we did), and my resident expert, Ike (thank you!), filled me in on the details. In the states the show is called "Junkyard Wars" and airs on The Learning Channel (TLC); for our European readers the British version of the show is called "Scrapheap Challenge". Two teams compete to build something major out of whatever they can find in the junkyard they are in, within a certain amount of time. Past projects have included amphibious vehicles, flying machines (I kid you not), and cannons. Even more interesting is that often it is the team that contains fewer "experts" that tends to do well. MY expert tells me that this is a show for the whole family, "entertaining AND educational". I can't imagine a show that would do more to encourage creativity, and out-of-the-box thinking. But be careful, you never know what the future Edisons in your family may start building out of the spare parts in the garage once they start watching the show. For more information on the show, and when/where you can see it in your area go to http://www.the-nerds.org/. This site is run by the first US team to appear on the show in England, and along w/answers to common questions, it also has links to the official "Junkyard Wars" and "Scrapheap Challenge" sites. If you can't access web sites, just check under The Learning Channel (TLC) evening programs in your TV Guide. POST IT...on your computer, and in your TV Guide (circle it).

Recipe: Spinach & Strawberry Salad (Thanks Aunt Pat!)

This is a great one for a special Valentine's Day salad, or an every day meal. Buy 2 bunches of spinach, cut off the stems, and soak spinach leaves in ice water for a couple of hours (this isn't required, but helps perk limp spinach back up). Wash & slice 1 pint of strawberries, set aside. Now here's what really makes the salad, the Sesame Seed Dressing...mix well in blender/mixer the following ingredients: 1/2C honey, 1Tblsp poppy seeds, 2Tblsp sesame seeds, 1 1/2tsp minced onions, 1/4tsp Worchester sauce, 1/4tsp paprika, 1/4C cider vinegar, & 1/2C corn oil (other cooking oil would probably be ok too). Set aside. Drain spinach from ice water, & tear into bite-sized pieces, mix w/strawberries. Just before serving, shake dressing well, pour over salad, and toss well. VERY yummy, and I am not usually a spinach lover. POST IT...in your recipe box & shopping list.

Final Words

JOKE (From Robert P.)

"A Sunday School teacher asked the children just before she dismissed them to go to church, "And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?" Annie replied, "Because people are sleeping." :-)

QUOTE

"Each smallest act of kindness reverberates across great distances and spans of time, affecting lives unknown to the one whose generous spirit was the source of this good echo, because kindness is passed on and grows each time it's passed, until a simple courtesy becomes an act of selfless courage years later and far away. Likewise, each small meanness, each expression of hatred, each act of evil."
