Ice Breakers & Party/Shower Games

Seems like September is the month for starting new groups. Whether it is school or clubs, there are lots of new faces to go around. Here is a great web site to check out for some games to break the ice with new friends. They also have a section on party & baby/bridal shower games, kids' parties, & more. If you can come up with a new one, they encourage you to send it in to them. But this list is so extensive that may prove difficult. And a big thank you to Pam, whose question about the games led me to the site. Check it out at http://www.residentassistant.com/links/socialprogresources.htm#Games & click on "Games". "Icebreakers" are the first on the list. You might also want to do a search on our Back Issue Page for "Games" for ideas for other types of gatherings. POST IT...in any party book you have, or in your cookbook near party recipes.

Military Retirement Tip

As my husband prepares to join the ranks of retired American military, we came across some info that was a big surprise to us & may be to you also. When you retire, the American military will only pay for you to move your HHG (HouseHold Goods) the distance to the state where you entered the military. Anything more than that distance is charged to you. For example, we are currently in North Carolina. If he had entered the military in South Carolina, then they would pay for pick up, delivery, and the amount that would cover the distance to South Carolina. BUT if we wanted to retire to Texas, then we would have to pay any amount over that fee. So, IF you are not sure of where you plan to retire & want to save some money, you might consider trying to get that last assignment as far away from the state where you entered as possible. That way you will be covered for anything in between. POST IT...with your Leave and Earnings Statement.

Whodunit Books

One of my favorite memories of my school days was a teacher who read us a Two Minute Mystery at the end of the day. The "Whodunit" books have short mysteries that you can read in about 2-5 minutes, with all the clues to solve the mystery. It isn't always as easy as it sounds, but everyone I knew LOVED trying to figure out the mystery. So if you are a teacher, what a wonderful way to get kids thinking creatively AND if you are a parent why not make it a family project. But don't give them the answer too quickly (yes, they do include answers), why not read it at the end of the day in a classroom, or for a bedtime story at home, but don't give them the answer till morning. Because there are so many titles it is easier to give you a couple of the most popular authors of these books: Stan Smith and Hy Conrad. You might also want to check out our November 1, 1997 issue which has an article on a web site, that may be more difficult for younger children, but has the same type story every week. Check it out at http://www.thecase.com POST IT...on your shopping list & by your computer.

College Students & Meningitis

The Centers for Disease Control is still recommending that college students be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis. This very serious ailment can spread quickly in group-living arrangements like dorms. Dorm students might then go out & infect students living off campus before they are aware they have it. College students, especially freshmen are 6 times MORE likely to get it than the general population. Since it resembles the flu in early stages, it can be dismissed as something minor until the student lands in the hospital. Over 300 people a year die from this infection, and it can also have lasting effects for those who "recover". Most colleges make the vaccine available at their health clinics, and some states even require the shots now. So protect your loved ones. POST IT...in your student's room, or by the phone if they are attending out of the area.

Love Languages

For years I have been hearing about Gary Chapman's book, "The Five Love Languages", and now I know why. This is an outstanding book for improving or even saving your marriage. But more than that, it can help us with our children & other people that we care about. The premise is that people
express & receive love in 5 different "languages": Quality Time, Words of Affirmation, Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. Now we may all use a combination of these languages at one time or another, but we each tend to have one PRIMARY language. If the person we love uses another language than we do, sometimes the message just doesn't get through. For example, if a wife's primary language is Gifts, then she expresses love by giving gifts and feels love when someone gives her a gift. But if her husband's language is Acts of Service, then he does things for his wife to show his love with his service, and unless someone does an act of service for him, then he may
not recognize it as love. It can be just as bad as my saying to someone "I love you" when they only speak Spanish. The book is a wonderful guide to help you determine what you language is, what others' languages are, and how to communicate that love in a better understood way. Check it out at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1881273156/makeanote.  This book, along with "Love Life for Every Married Couple", would be a wonderful wedding or bridal shower gift. If you have kids, then it would go with Ross Campbell's "How to Really Love Your Child/Teenager" books. POST IT... on your shopping list.

Back Issue Treasures

Lots of back issue items to cover today. First of all, we are still working on the Diet for a Poisoned Planet lists for the Bonus Page. A recent article in a major consumer magazine seemed to back up my earlier comment that the safe & unsafe foods seem to remain constant, in spite of changes in environmental law, w/few exceptions. OCTOBER IS CLERGY APPRECIATION MONTH so September is the time to start planning special events to make a difference in your pastor's life. Don't underestimate how much this will mean to them. Check out our September 15th, 1997 back issue for more information AND here is a web site with some ideas to get you started http://www.christianityonline.com/fun/holidays/clergyapp/honor.html

JOKE

Actually, this was a local TV station's news story, but I thought it was pretty funny. Albeit unintentionally so.

"The reporters were gathered for the first press conference of a federal task force assigned to begin monitoring airline performance after a summer travel season marred by thousands of flight delays. Unfortunately the task force members were delayed for over an hour, so the press conference was DELAYED." :-)
