Well, it may not be a bad idea. A recent news article cited a study "that found dishwashing soap was 100 times MORE effective than hospital-strength antibacterial soaps in killing at least one type of cold virus". I'm not sure I would use it for the bath/shower, but at our grocery store dishwashing soap is HALF the price of liquid soaps (4 cents/oz vs. 8 cents/oz) and you CAN buy antibacterial dishwashing soap now too. The nice thing about the liquid soaps is that it is a LOT easier to keep your sink clean when you use them AND bacteria can grow on bars of soap, believe it or not. Don't forget to count to 20 when you are washing your hands with any kind of soap or it doesn't do much good in any case. POST IT...on your shopping list. * * * * * * * Sunday School Teacher of the Year ContestThose men & women work so hard & sacrifice so much of their time, why not give them the chance at a trip for 2 to Hawaii? Gospel Light has an annual contest to do just that. So call 1-800-354-4224 and get a pile of nomination forms sent to you and pass them out to ALL the Sunday School students, children & adults alike. The winner receives the trip and their church receives a $500 gift certificate for curriculum. EVERY nominee receives a personalized Certificate of Appreciation and lapel pin. The deadline for return of entries is August 31st, so now is the time to request them. Pass them out the beginning of July to give everyone time to fill them out. To make it even easier for people to nominate, collect the entries at the church & mail them all in together. POST IT...by your phone and in your calendar. * * * * * * * Summer Tips-Protect Yourself AND Your Children from the SunYou've heard it all before, "there's no such thing as a 'safe' tan". But do you realize that how you protect yourself and ESPECIALLY your children TODAY, may make a life or death difference in their future? If nothing else, it could make a huge difference in their health as adults. American Caucasians have a 1 in 4 chance, a ONE IN FOUR CHANCE, of developing basal cell skin cancer. Which is why it makes me cringe, whenever I see a child with a burn. Even ONE severe sunburn as a child significantly increases the risk of developing skin cancer. And if their parents aren't careful, then why should they feel a need to be careful when they get older. A tan is actually your body trying to PROTECT itself from the sun's damaging rays (yes, even tanning beds too). Not to mention the fact that it causes your skin to age faster. I'm not saying that we should all hide out in our homes & board up our windows, I love the outdoors and I think all kids should spend a good amount of their time out there too, being a couch potato is just as bad as being a "baked potato". BUT when children (and parents) go out into the sun, they can protect their skin AND their future health. If you're not on the move, try to stay in the shade as much as possible; go for the picnic table in the shade instead of out in the sun. Try to avoid the middle of the day 10am-4pm when the rays are the strongest; if you're going to the beach enjoy it in the mornings & late afternoons & spend the middle of the day checking out restaurants or taking a nap. Cover up as much of the skin as is comfortable, perhaps light pants instead of shorts, use shirts with short sleeves vs. tank tops, one piece swim suits instead of 2 piece. Wear a shirt OVER swim suits to protect the back & shoulders, even in the water. Wear hats. Use a sun block lotion, the highest SPF you can find w/UVA AND UVB protection, over any skin that is still left uncovered. And don't just do this when you are out at a beach or pool, do it when they go out for their regular play. A Canadian study just found that the children doing this were a LOT less likely to get skin cancer than their control group counterparts. Don't forget the sunglasses, just one day in strong sunlight can result in a burned cornea, which could increase your chances for cataracts later. Look for polarized, plastic sunglasses that block UVA AND UVB rays. Don't lay out for the sole purpose to get a tan, and don't let your children do it either, the life you save may be right in your own family. Remember the damage to your skin or eyes is cumulative, it doesn't heal & then start over. POST IT...on your shopping list and by your front door as a checklist for the family before they go out. EDITOR'S SIDE NOTE: One thing that really concerns me is that so often the lifeguards you see at pools do NOT take precautions to protect themselves from the sun, in fact they often seem to go out of their way to expose themselves as much as possible with their dress. While I realize they are individuals with the right to make their own decisions off duty, when they are on duty they are an example (whether they want to be or not) to the children at the pools. Perhaps it is time a request be made to pool supervisors for a better example of protecting ourselves against a well documented health risk. * * * * * * * Summer Tips-Protect Yourself AND Your Children from DehydrationMost of us, and especially children do NOT drink enough water. Do you really know how much your children get? By the time you actually feel thirsty, you are already mildly dehydrated. Do your kids complain of headaches after being out in the heat? It may be dehydration & not just the heat. The younger the child the easier it is for them to become dehydrated. In fact research has shown that 70% of preschool children do not drink ANY water at all during the day. An active, 50 lb child needs about a qt or water each day, and an additional 5 oz for every 30 min outside or involved in strenuous physical activity. A teen or adult needs 8-12C a day & 1-3C for every hour they exercise. An easy way to encourage children to drink more water AND to keep track of how much they have had, is to give each child (this would work for adults too) a container at the beginning of the day that has the amount of water in it that they should have for that day. If it is the middle of the day & their container is still full on the counter, it is time to get them to take a water break whether they like it or not. Check with your doctor for what will work best for you. POST IT...near your kitchen sink. * * * * * * * Do It Yourself VIN Etching to Save $$$ On Car InsuranceMost insurance companies will give you a good discount if you do VIN etching (USAA 15%). This means that your Vehicle Identification Number is etched on all the windows of the car, very small & hardly noticeable at all. While some military/civilian police departments will do it free (we had ours done at Ft. Leavenworth), most car repair places charge big bucks. They now have kits to do it yourself. I recommend the Auto Etch for about $25. When you order you give the company your VIN number & they actually make a stencil w/the number. Then you put the stencil on the window, spread on the cream that contains a mild acid to "etch" the number in, wipe it all off after a few minutes & you're done. While I have not used this product myself, the stencil system sounds better than some of the other kits I have heard about. To order call 1-888-288-6382 or check them out on the internet at http://www.autoetch.net. A new study has found a therapy that produced SIGNIFICANT results in over 200 stroke patients and it doesn't seem to matter how long it has been since the stroke actually occurred. In other words, if someone had a stroke 2 yrs ago, they could still see "significant" improvement. The researchers have found that this non-drug therapy is effective in "virtually every patient who begins treatment with at least some slight movement in the hand or foot". The therapy is called Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy and to make a long story short, it involves constraining the good limb during waking hours for 2-3 weeks, which ends up helping the brain to rewire itself to use the "bad" limb and significantly improve ability in that same limb. For more information go to http://abcnews.go.com/onair/WorldNewsTonight/wnt000601_CL_stroketreatment_feature.html and check with your doctor. The NIH is also beginning a study on the therapy.
