* * * * * * * NOTE: Each entry has a suggested "POST IT..." location at the end. We recommend that you print out the ezine, cut out each entry, & post it in these locations to make it easier for you to find when you need it. And if you like what you read, be sure to pass it on to someone else who can use it. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * EDITOR'S NOTE/UPDATEOur technical difficulties have been resolved and that's how we have this
current issue on the web site and have added new * * * * * * * GOOD DEAL ON ANOTHER STATE QUARTERS MAPAfter having looked all over & recommended the company in the last issue, I came across a less expensive map in Wal-mart for only $10. It isn't quite as nice as the $16.65 one and doesn't come with the quarters or pamphlet, but is still very nice. Check it out at your local Wal-Mart, mostly likely close to the registers. POST IT...on your shopping list. * * * * * * * THREE GREAT WEB SITES/MANY "CHANCES" TO WINThere are three web sites that I would like to recommend at this time. The first is affiliated with the Right Start children's catalog and they are giving away a $15,000 scholarship every 15 days for their 15th anniversary this year. So it will continue until the end of the year. You can enter it once, or daily to improve your odds. Go to http://www.rightstart.com/global/contest/contestHome.cfm. The second site is http://www.freescholarships.com/. This site was so popular the first time it opened several months ago, that it crashed due to the traffic. It has quietly reopened now and has a lot of great links to schools/college info, and much, much more. They give away a daily $10,000 scholarship, a monthly $25,000 scholarship, and a quarterly $50,000 scholarship. You "earn chances" by going to different places on this site and you can even check your odds depending on your personal "chances" total. As more people find out about the site & participate, the odds will get worse. These scholarships can be used for home or private school, college, vocational, even to pay off existing education bills. The third site is http://www.iwon.com/ & is very heavily advertised. But this site isn't just a way to try to win some money ($10,000/day, $1 million/month, $10 million/year), but it has a lot of great links to news sites, and a FANTASTIC section on preparing your taxes. A homeschooler recently won $10,000 on this site. So check them out and let me know if you win anything. These sites are all COMPLETELY FREE. POST IT...by your computer. * * * * * * * CYNTHIA TOBIAS ("LEARNING STYLES/STRONG WILLED CHILD")In a recent issue I recommended Cynthia Tobias book on strong-willed children. Well, here is your chance to hear one of her ALWAYS entertaining radio presentations. She is SCHEDULED (unfortunately schedules are sometimes changed) to be on Focus on the Family on March 27th-28th. In most areas it airs around 8am and is repeated at 7pm, and lasts for 30 min. To find a station near you that airs Focus, go to http://www.fotf.org/ and click on "Stations" under "Focus on Radio" or call 1-800-A-FAMILY. You will find yourself laughing at her examples, but also nodding your head in agreement. This is a great program for parents, grandparents, or teachers. POST IT...on your calendar. * * * * * * * APRIL FOOLS' TREATHere are some fun ideas for April Fools' Day. Why not make a fancy dessert and when the family comes to the table, serve that first, like it is the expected thing to do. Everyone at our house expects it now. :-) POST IT...on your calendar. * * * * * * * LAST MINUTE ST. PATRICK'S DAY GOODIESOkay, the time is fast approaching when you have to have those goodies for a Bible Study, kids' class, or office treat. And while those Irish Potato Candies (last issue) sound good, you just don't have the time now (next year :-). Here is an easy recipe that I have mentioned in previous issues that is easily adapted to almost any holiday and you almost always have the ingredients around. They are known as Meringue AKA Forgotten AKA Cloud Cookies. Preheat the oven to 400 (this is VERY important). Beat 2 egg whites til very stiff, add 3/4C sugar & beat til stiff, add 1 tsp vanilla & beat til stiff. At this time you can add food coloring that is appropriate for the holiday (green-St. Pat's/Christmas/Easter, red-Valentine's/Independence, yellow-Easter, orange-Thanksgiving). Then stir in 1C chopped nuts & 1 C appropriate colored M & M's (or any kind of chips-chocolate, butterscotch, peanut butter). Drop by 1/2 tsp-fuls onto cookie sheets either greased or lined with wax paper. Can be close together, don't expand much. At this time you can also put an M&M on top or colored sugar on top for decoration, if desired. Place cookie sheets into oven and TURN OVEN OFF (yes, turn oven OFF). Leave in overnight, ready to eat in the morning. Makes about 6 dozen. POST IT...in your recipe box or on your calendar. * * * * * * * QUOTE (A MODERN PARABLE-A LITTLE LONG FOR THIS SECTION, BUT WELL WORTH THE READ)On a dangerous seacoast where shipwrecks often happened was a makeshift lifesaving station. Its devoted workers went out day or night, searching for the lost & saving many lives. Soon the little station developed quite a reputation for its unselfish work. Many people joined the station, giving of their time, money, & effort for the support of its work. They bought new boats and trained new crews. The little lifesaving station grew. Then, some of the new members of the station grew unhappy because the building was crude & poorly equipped. So they enlarged the building, replaced emergency cots with comfortable beds, & put in nice furniture. Soon the station became a popular gathering place for its members. Most of them lost interest in going to sea on lifesaving missions, so they hired a professional crew to do this work. One day a large ship was wrecked off the coast. The hired lifesaving crew brought in boatloads of people. They were wounded, dirty, and sick. The beautiful new building was soiled & damaged. So they property committee had a shower house built outside the club where shipwreck victims could be cleaned up before coming inside. At the next meeting, club members got into a big dispute. Most wanted to stop the lifesaving work because it interfered with their regular activities. But some members insisted that lifesaving was still their primary purpose. However, they were voted down. The majority told them if they wanted to save lives, they could start their own station down the coast. They did. As the years passed, this new station also developed into a club, and a third lifesaving station was founded. If you visit that area today, you will find a number of exclusive clubs along the coast. Shipwrecks still happen, but most of the people drown in stormy waters just off the shore. ---Frank G. Voight EDITOR'S NOTE: Sound like any organization you know?
