EDITOR'S/WEBMASTER'S NOTE: Due to technical difficulties beyond our control (crash of hard drive on main computer), this issue is going out a little late and will not be put onto the web site on schedule. We will be adding the current issue and new links, as soon as we get things back up & running.  Thank you for your patience. We hope to get things back to normal ASAP.

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE BOOK/WEB SITE

For those of you interested in learning American Sign Language, my favorite (out-of-print) book was recently updated & republished. The thing that I think makes it so great is that it groups the signs by category, rather than alphabetically, which makes it much easier to learn. The book is called, "Signing" by Elaine Costello. It is a large paperback & runs $17.95. But if you are a teacher or homeschooler, don't forget to ask for you 20% educator's discount at Barnes & Noble or Books-a-Million. If you prefer to check out the signs on the web, go to http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/aslweb/browser.htm. Not only is it fun to learn, but you never know when another language might come in handy. (The book and site will be added to our web site when technical problems are resolved). POST IT...on your shopping list & near your computer.

ONLINE AND/OR DELIVERED GROCERIES

Ever wondered if it would be worthwhile to shop online, or have your groceries delivered? A recent CNN article has done the homework for you.  What they found was that while the "buy online/have delivered" sites, like http://www.peapod.com and http://www.webvan.com, were convenient, you would still save more money at your local grocery store. There was one site, http://WebHouse.priceline.com, that did save money, BUT was very time consuming. You go through their list of products, make bids on the products, and if your bids are accepted then your credit card is automatically charged, THEN you have to go to the local store & pick up the exact items on your list from the shelves before checking out. If you would like to read more go to http://cnn.com/2000/FOOD/news/02/04/priceline/index.html. One thing that is often missing from the bigger name web sites are generic brands which would save you a lot of money over almost any name brand. Most of the other grocery delivery services, like meat or frozen food companies, also usually end up costing you more overall. But if you can pay for the convenience...:-) POST IT... by your computer & shopping list.

CYBERSURFARI

On March 21st Lycos will be starting a new round of Cybersurfari. This is always a great way to find new web sites for young and old, learn more about surfing the internet, and win some prizes too. You can play as an individual, a family, class of students, or homeschool group. This year there are cash prizes for getting others to sign up. For more info, check out their web site & get ready to surf at http://www.cybersurfari.org POST IT...by your computer.

FAMILIES IN THE ER

For all you "ER" TV show fans, we sometimes forget that every day REAL people are heading to Emergency Rooms with loved ones. Most hospitals have policies that family members are not allowed in trauma rooms, esp. when the patient is near death. But a new study done in "The American Journal of Nursing" indicates that it may be helpful both to the patients, family members, AND staff to have the family present. Of course, this is a decision that each family should make with their doctor, but 100% of the families who participated in the study said that they would still want to be present if they had it to do all over again. In particular it helped the families to say goodbye, in spite of CPR or the often disturbing heroic measures taken. To read more about it go to http://abcnews.go.com/sections/living/DailyNews/er000217.html. POST IT...near your computer & with your health insurance cards.

FREE CHRISTIAN TEACHING TAPES

Discipleship Tape Ministries (http://www.dtm.org) has always provided a large selection of FREE Christian Teaching Tapes on a wide variety of topics. If you are an email only reader you can call 1-800-375-7778 to request a current catalog, but remember they are all FREE. If you wish to make a donation they will accept, but they never ask you for one. I have had articles on this before, but felt it was time for a reminder. For those of you who have already enjoyed these tapes, Russell Kelfer (teacher on the tapes) passed away early last month. My friends always used to joke that he must be hiding in our closets because he seemed to hit so close to home with the comments in the lessons. God truly blessed Mr. Kelfer with a gift for teaching. His wife has said that the ministry will go on and I am sure that his tapes will continue to bless many, many people in the years to come. My favorites are #174 on Worry and #712-Side B on Suffering. For our international readers, they also have tapes available in a variety of languages. POST IT...by your phone or computer.

BACK ISSUE TREASURES: IRISH POTATO CANDIES, ST PAT'S QUIZ/GAME, TOY SHOPPING WEB SITES...

The March 1st, 1999 and March 15th, 1999 issues have several fun ideas and recipes for St. Patrick's Day. The Irish Potato Candies are sort of like a coconut bon-bon rolled in cinnamon. They look like little dirty potatoes (at potlucks you may find that someone keeps moving them to the veggie area :-), but were a big hit with our readers last year. To request the issues, send 2 emails to make-a-note-issues@xc.org and in the Subject Line or Body of the Message type in "MAN-014", then send another email with "MAN-015".  You should receive the issues shortly. POST IT...by your computer.

JOKE (FROM SUSAN C.)

"Mean Moms"

We had the meanest mother in the whole world! While other kids ate candy for breakfast, we had to have cereal, eggs, and toast. When others had Pepsi & a Twinkie for lunch, we had to eat sandwiches. And you can guess our mother fixed us a dinner that was different from what other kids had too. Mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. You'd think we were convicts in a prison. She had to know who our friends were, and what we were doing with them. She insisted that if we said we would be gone for an hour, we would be gone for an hour or less. We were ashamed to admit it, but she had the nerve to break the Child Labor Laws by making us work. We had to wash the dishes, make the beds, learn to cook, vacuum the floor, do laundry, and all sorts of cruel jobs. I think she would lie awake at night thinking of more things for us to do. She always insisted on us telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. By the time we were teenagers, she could read our minds. Then, life was really tough! Mother wouldn't let our friends just honk the horn when they drove up. They had to come up to the door so she could meet them. While everyone else could date when they were 12 or 13, we had to wait until we were 16. Because of our mother we missed out on lots of things other kids experienced. None of us have ever been caught shoplifting, vandalizing other's property, or were ever arrested for any crime. It was all her fault. Now that we have left home, we are all God-fearing, educated, honest adults. We are doing our best to be mean parents just like Mom was. I think that's what's wrong with the world today. It just doesn't have enough mean moms anymore.

QUOTE

"Forgiveness becomes much easier when we can look past our offender's motivations and see God's hand supernaturally working all things together for good...But even when you cannot see God's hand through the fog of your pain, God still asks you to trust Him. He has not forgotten you. He will not forsake you."

--Robert Jeffress from "When Forgiveness Doesn't Make Sense"
