Yugoslavian M48A Project

M48A Pictures Page 3
Finally, here is the last incarnation of my M48A! I bought set of ZRAK rings and bases from Ken at Kebco, LLC and had my gunsmith mount them on my rifle. The scope is an old steel-tube Weaver K4 that I bought off Ebay for $36. It was probably built sometime in the 1970s, but it looks the part for the rifle. The rear mount base had to have the corner cut off to clear the bolt when it opens, but this is a common modification for all the older-style Mauser 98 scope mounting systems. The only drawback was that the bolt had to be bent down a little more to clear the eyepiece of the scope, but actually unless someone looks really hard, they're probably never notice the modification. The only other option was to have the top of the bolt handle ground off...and I wouldn't have been happy with the look of that.

The neat thing about the ZRAK scope mounting system is that the front base/ring is dovetailed and the rear ring is spring-loaded so that the scope and rings can be removed from the rifle to allow the iron sites to be used. When I test fired the rifle I noticed that the scope was sliding forward in the rings from the recoil. I discovered that the front ring wasn't tightening down on the scope tube enough to hold it in place, but the rear ring was fine. I used a file to file off the mating surfaces of the top-half of the ring so that it will tighten down more, and that solved the problem. Below are some pictures of the ZRAK system installed on my rifle. Click on a thumbnail below for the full-sized image.
