The Rookie Allied Training Squadron is formed to build and battle 1/144 scale warships according to the rules of the International R/C Warship Combat Club. Membership includes enrollment in national IR/CWCC and is especially oriented to parent/child teams. RATS is an ideal way to enter the hobby, allowing senior members of IR/CWCC to provide coaching through the building and battling process.

RATS Stick Together! The RATS meet every month during the winter building season to exchange tips and share experience. In addition, each meeting will feature a special presentation on a battleship-related topic. Each child member of RATS will accept special fleet duties; we have a Minister of Propaganda, a Minister of Comparative Prototype Design, a Minister of Technology, and so on. Adults will be content to sit on the Council of Economic Ministers where they will fund the shipbuilding efforts.

What is Model Warship Combat?? We build scale model warships armed with bb guns and equipped with radio control and bilge bumps. We battle these ships, and if too much damage is take the ship will sink. But no problem- these ships are made to sink and to be quickly repaired with a little glue and putty. Warships can be built starting at $250 depending on size and complexity, and will last for years of fun. Membership dues in IR/CWCC are only $14 per year, and include a subscription to Hullbusters magazine. A $40 per year membership in NAMBA (National Model Boat Association) provides insurance and is required for any competition in an IR/CWCC sanctioned event.

The Ideal Parent/Child Activity? Maybe so. This is something parents can enjoy as much as kids. Until I found RATS, I dressed up like an Indian, slept on the floor of the local YMCA, carved wood-block car and did all sorts of silly things for fun. To tell the truth, the shipbuilding is much better.

More than a hobby- a door to the grown-up world Model Warship Combat provides a direct connection to history. Some of these kids become real experts on the War in the Pacific, and go on to read serious biography and history books.

RATS will encourage each child to accept a post of responsibility. Our Minster of Propaganda will run our Web page and information offensive. Our Minister of Technology will run a test program on our bilge pumps, bb cannon and so on. Every kid will have a responsible job, and will report back to the RATS team.
