BIEBER HISTORY AND GENEALOGY

History and genealogy of the Bieber / Beaver family that emigrated from Hirschland, Alsace to Berks County, Pennsylvania in the mid 18th Century. This page is still evolving. I will be adding to it (slowly ... I do have a day job), so you may want to check back later for more information. Visit my Gallery for more photos of the land where the Biebers first settled in America.

The classic work on genealogy of the American Bieber / Beaver family is "History and Genealogy of the Bieber-Beaver Family" by Rev Irvin M Beaver, published in 1939. The book is almost 1,000 pages long. It names appoximately 20,000 members of the Bieber family born over a period of 4 centuries. (My parents, John and Edna (nee Christman), appear as entry VIII. 3. on page 424.)

Back in 1939, the subscription price for Rev Beaver's book was $5.25, postpaid. I was lucky to find an original copy in 1993 offered for $60 in an antique store in Kutztown, Pa. It was the spark for my interest in genealogy. At the time of writing (1998), photocopied versions of Rev Beaver's book can be purchased for approximately $130 from Higginson Books or from Blair's Books.

Much of the material on this Web page concerns the early history of the Bieber family in America. In some cases I correct assertions made by Rev Beaver. I hope this will not be perceived as criticism of Rev Beaver's monumental work. Rev Beaver had comparatively little solid evidence on which to base his conclusions about early Bieber history, whereas I have benefitted from original records microfilmed by the LDS Church, and from compilations of Alsatian church and notarial records published by Dr Gerhard Hein (also available on microfilm through the LDS church).
