Ice Climbing 2003 (January-March,
2003)
Kerry got lucky and had the chance to ice climb 4-5 times during the
early part of 2003 - All up in the Catskills (in New York state). He
climbed at Stony Clove, the Hell Hole, and the Devil's Kitchen. Each
time he climbed with Wil.
Below are a few pictures from some of those trips. Again, click
on the thumbs to see the larger version.
Stony Clove (January 2003): Below
is a picture of Kerry at the end of the day (after the hike down from the
base), and the other picture shows Wil getting ready to lead through a tricky
steep section of ice (the route moves up and to the left).
The Hell Hole (February 2003). The
Hell Hole is an incredible place to climb. It was absolutely gorgeous.
The ice is very steep
and most of the climbs are also fairly long (70-80 feet). There are
four pictures taken during one of Kerry's days there. The first picture
below
shows Kerry moving up some steep ice, with the next shot shows a nice view
of the hike down into the Hell Hole (taken from within
the Hell Hole). The last two shots show Kerry on some more steep
ice, then a shot of Kerry getting ready to start another climb.
The Devil's Kitchen in March of 2003. The
Devil's Kitchen was another awesome place to ice climb in the Catskills.
Its a much longer hike to reach, but well worth the sweat. The routes
are all very steep, and they are even longer than
those at the Hell Hole - typically 100 feet per pitch.. The first
picture (lower left) shows Kerry. The middle picture gives a nice
perspective to some of the routes,
(specifically the "Advocate") and the last picture shows someone working
on one of the hard chandelier climbs between the "Advocate" and
the water fall..
