On July 7, 2004 it was announced that KC would be receiving a United Hockey League franchise. The majority owner, Stephen Franke, is chief executive owner of MidWest Quality Gloves Inc. He has had a residence in Chillicothe, MO (90 miles northeast of KC) for 19 years. Franke is also a majority owner of Summit Sports, the parent company of the UHL's Fort Wayne Komets.
