The removal of the ex- IC rails in Green county last year did not dampen the sprit of those who operated the public motorcar rides there during Depot Days in previous years. Mr. Wade Wittenwyler of rural Monticello, WI with the help of others sought out another site where they could provide railroad motorcar rides for a fourth year in a row. Motorcars are small motorized rail vehicles that were used by the railroads to transport people and equipment in order to perform maintenance of tracks as well as other duties. Motorcars have mostly been replaced by pick up trucks with equipment (hy-rails) to allow them to operate on the rails. In cooperation with the Village of Brooklyn, WI with the Cities of Fitchburg and Oregon, a suitable section of railroad track was found. During
Depot Days, people by the hundreds flocked to Brooklyn, WI to purchase
a $5.00 ticket for an hour long motorcar ride. They had the choice
of either going north to Oregon, or going south towards the City of
Evansville, WI. On Friday evening, the kick-off motorcar parade was held at 8:00 p.m. There were over 40 motorcars at the event this year. Motorcar operators and their guests were treated to beautiful spring scenery while traveling towards Fitchburg, WI and back. Both
Saturday and Sunday, the rides ran on the hour beginning at 10:00
a.m. The last ride departed Brooklyn at 4:00 a.m. In total, over 1200
people rode this year. The weather was perfact and everyone had a
great time. Hopefully the motorcar rides will be available again next
year during Depot Days 2001. Home | Jim's Railroad Motorcars | Green County Railroads | Wis Rail History | Back No part
