First, a brief description of the designation systems used by the American armed
forces to designate attack aircraft. There is a lot of confusion out there about American attack aircraft
designations, primarily because for a long time the Navy and USAAC/USAAF/USAF had completely different aircraft designation systems.
The following is a description of how the Army and the Air Force have designated
their attack aircraft:
