US Coast Guard Aircraft Serial Numbers

Last revised March 23, 2008

The precursor of what eventually became the US Coast Guard was established in 1790 when Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton created a force of revenue cutters to enforce laws against smuggling, to protect shipping from pirates, and to prevent contraband from entering the United States. Over the next few years, other government organizations were established which performed additional maritime tasks such as providing lighthouses and other navigational aids as well as for maintaining search and rescue services for mishaps at sea. Programs were also established that provided inspection operations and training programs in support of safer operations at sea. For a long time these tasks were performed by several separate and distinct government organizations, but they were all formally combined to form the United States Coast Guard in 1915.

The Coast Guard has been shuffled between several different government organizations during its career. When the Coast Guard was first officially formed in 1915, it was formally a part of the Treasury Department. However, during World Wars I and II the Coast Guard was temporarily transferred to the Department of the Navy for the duration of these conflicts. The Coast Guard was transferred to the newly-established Department of Transportation in April of 1967. In March of 2003, the Coast Buard was formally transferred from the Department of Transportation to the newly- created Department of Homeland Security.

The Coast Guard was relatively late in acquiring its own aircraft, and did not receive its first aircraft until the 1920s. The first Coast Guard aircraft was a Vought UO-1, borrowed in 1925 from the Navy for a year. It was used to fly patrols to combat rum-running. On March 3, 1926, the Coast Guard was given permission to purchase three Loening OL-5s and two Vought UO-4s, the first planes that the Coast Guard could call their own. More aircraft were soon to follow in the years 1927-1934. These first series of aicraft were given one- and two-digit serial numbers assigned in groups.

The second series of Coast Guard aircraft (1934-1936) were given three-digit numbers assigned in groups, with the first digit indicating the type of aircraft. Those serials beginning with a 1 were amphibians, those beginning with 2 were flying boats, those beginning with 3 were land-based aircraft, and those beginning with 4 were convertible designs. At this time, the aircraft originally ordered in the first series were reserialled with numbers in the second series.

On October 13, 1936, all Coast Guard aircraft ever acquired (including those already withdrawn from service or written off) were reserialled with a three-digit number prefixed with a V. On December 28, 1945, the V prefix was deleted. From Jan 1, 1951 onwards, a 1 prefix was added in front of the three-digit serial number. Beginning in the 1980s, serials were assigned in blocks for each type, usually with gaps between adjacent blocks.

For a brief time during the 1930s, Coast Guard seaplanes were assigned names, much like ships. This usage became so common the many official Coast Guard communications, and many press releases and newspaper stories referred to the aircraft by name only. From 1933 to 1936 the aircraft were all named for stars. Their names appeared on each side of the nose of the aircraft and served as an accurate means of identification for the planes.

Beginning in February of 1969, aircraft that were assigned to the Secretary of the Treasury were serialled in a separate sequence beginning with "1".
