676 (70th BW) lost Jul 19, 1969 in take-off accident from
U-Tapao AB, Thailand. The plane took off and immediately experienced
engine problems. They tried a go-around, but impacted just short of
the runway -- they did not have time to jettison their bomb load.
The aircraft caught fire on impact (if not already burning from the
engine problems) but I think most of the crew managed to escape (I'm
not sure if any crewmembers were killed). Meanwhile, the rescue HH-43B
Huskie (60-0278) was coming in to fight the fire and was attempting to assist
in saving the crew. Normally in a D-model, the tail gunner blows
the turret and exits out the back of the aircraft. However, either
because of the surrounding fuel fire or damage caused by the impact,
he didn't/couldn't blow the turret and went forward and exited out the
rear wheelwell. Tragically, the Huskie crew saw the turret in place
and assumed he was still in the aircraft. On approaching the crash
site to locate the gunner (the Huskies would use their rotor downwash
to clear a path of flames), the bombs on the B-52 cooked off and took
the Huskie crew with them
