ELDERS, RELATIONSHIP OF MEMBERS TO
Introduction:
1. God's arrangement is for His people to work together in the
local congregation, the only unit through which we can
function.
2. God's arrangement is for each congregation to work under the
oversight of qualified men known as elders.
3. It necessarily follows, if there is to be oversight, then
there must be those over whom this oversight is exercised.
4. Thus, the lesson: "The Relationship of the Members to the
Elders."
I. KNOW THEM THAT LABOR AMONG YOU:
1. 1 Thessalonians. 5:12.
2. "Know" -- to recognize as one in authority, distinct from
the other members.
3. More than simply having a knowledge of their presence.
4. The elder is worthy of respect and honor.
5. Notice: It is a "labor." A work to be done.
II. ESTEEM THEM HIGHLY IN LOVE:
1. 1 Thessalonians. 5:13.
2. "Esteem" -- appreciate their worth, recognize their
character.
3. "Exceeding highly in love" -- A love that reflects an
appreciation for their work and the dignity of their
office.
4. Elders who fulfill their responsibilities will be worthy of
such esteem.
III. OBEY THE ELDERS:
1. Hebrews 13:17.
2. If there is to be a "rule over you," then there must be a
submission to that rule.
3. The office of the eldership is more than being an example,
or only a position; it involves "rule" and "submit."
4. Not to say that elders are infallible.
IV. SUBMIT TO THEM:
1. Hebrews 13:17.
2. "Submit" -- a willingness to give up to another; to be
submissive and patient to authority.
3. Willing to receive counsel, encouragement, correction and
help.
V. COUNT THEM WORTHY OF DOUBLE HONOR:
1. 1 Timothy 5:17.
2. "Double honor" -- monetary support, wages.
3. Not only respect and esteem; but support from the
congregation.
4. Titus 1:7 --"not greedy of filthy lucre" Elders is not to
accept the work for the sake of money. Money is not the
reason behind their desire.
5. 1 Corinthians 9:13-14. Those who labor in the gospel may
be supported by the gospel.
VI. RECEIVE NOT AN ACCUSATION:
1. 1 Timothy 5:19-20.
2. As stated, elders are not infallible. But, extreme care
must be used. Accusation must be substantiated.
3. No place for idle gossip at any time, but especially in
regard to the elder.
Conclusion:
1. Truly, this is a two-way street.
2. Elders have oversight; congregation submitting.
3. All working together in the salvation of souls.
4. God's ways are always right!!!
