Shepherds In Shelters is a project of San Francisco Bay Area German Shepherd Dog Rescue and Northern California German Shepherd Rescue. The following is a listing of dogs believed to be German Shepherds in area shelters and rescues. These dogs are available directly from the shelters/rescues and SF Bay Area German Shepherd Rescue and Northern California German Shepherd Rescue may not have evaluated these dogs. We make no guarantees as to the health or temperament of these dogs and list them solely as a service. This is not a complete list, so please visit your local shelter yourself! If there is a doubt whether the dog is a purebred GSD, it is noted in the description.

As some of these dogs are in imminent danger of euthanasia, it is best to contact the shelter immediately if you are interested.

This sweet girl may be shy at first, but she has a good heart. At first she may seem like one of those typical shy shelter dogs, but she is so much more. She is a good girl and just wants someone to sit with. I can picture her curled up in front of a warm fire or right at your feet. She is a very intelligent girl, but hasn't gotten the chance to really show it. She knows "sit" and would easily learn so much more. She is weary on the leash, but does not pull. It is believed that she may have had a bad life so far, but we would like to change that. Please give this girl a chance, you won't regret it. Gina will need to be spayed before she goes home with her new family. Contact the shelter for details.
Alameda County Fairmont Shelter (510) 667-7709	Reese has been living in a yard with an older dog, apparently without a great deal of human attention. She is not used to being inside and seems both puzzled and intrigued by things like leashes and baths and people who say sit. Reese is good-natured and is willing to accept these new experiences for the sake of the human company involved. She is playful but not overly active, easy to walk, likes to be with you and comes when called. Reese enjoys interacting with people, and seems to have great potential as a companion. She shows a cautious but friendly interest in other dogs. Approximately 65-70 lbs. about 5 years old.
Alameda County Fremont Furry Friends Rescue www.furryfriendsrescue.org	Jada came to FFR on 3-11-04 from the Humane Society Silicon Valley. She is a quiet, shy, nice, and a beautiful dog. She is very skinny right now, so she will need TLC and good food. She has a deformed left front paw which she born with. Two end toes are fused together. SHe will need some basic training and a quiet home (no kids) to build her confidence and give her love she has been missing.

This boy was abandoned in June of last year and has been longing for his very own home since then. Galileo is one stunning, smart, patient & remarkable soul. He is mild, sweet, loves other dogs & is so looking forward to a human family to call his very own. Galileo is simply glorious, mellow,great w/children & has such a majestic,serene air about him. Fabulous boy. His long,shiny black hair is wonderfully soft & though he is thin now, he can only look more handsome as gains weight. This pet is: up to date with routine shots, already house trained

He friendly, very gentle, good with other dogs, sweet, will give you kisses (gently), well behaved, leash trained, a little shy but very good natured. He was starved, so he is very skinny right now. Will need TLC and lot's of healthy food

Calm and mellow, Anthony pays attention to his humans and rewards us with gentle face licks. A great dog for someone looker for an intelligent, larger animal. Alameda County Hayward Animal Services Bureau 510-293-7200	Rella is a beautiful young German Shepherd who is a happy girl with a lot of energy. She can be quite a handful to take for a walk and would definately be a candidate for doggie classes. With the proper training and some TLC Rella would make a great companion for someone experience with the German Shepherd breed. Amador County Martell, CA 209-233-6378 Email couey@volcano.net	ANGEL German Shepherd Dog Mix Size: Medium Age: Young Sex: Female I.D: IMPOUND 04-UC-53 ANGEL is a pretty 10 month old girl, who was only too happy to get outside and have her picture taken today. ANGEL warms up quickly to new friends; affectionate and playful, she loves to have her tummy rubbed. She runs like a gazelle and her pointed ears and waggy tail let you know she's happy to see you. ANGEL has been an outside dog and she is fine with other animals and good with kids. For someone willing to take the time for basic obedience training, it will prove ANGEL to be a lovely companion.

Calaveras County Humane Society of Calaveras County Murphys atg@jps.net	Murphy is a 52lb German Shepherd/Husky mix dog full of energy and fun. He is already neutered and is approximately one year old. He was turned in by his owner for lack of time and attention. He said that Murph is great with other dogs.. He is manageable on a leash, but full of himself. A good round of obedience training will do this fellow a world of good. He has a thick, healthy coat and would make a fine outside dog....weather permitting and a good dog house. You sure would not be bothered by the deer eating up your yard with Murphy around! We will post more info on him as we learn it. Murph has had no accidents in his new foster home and is doing REALLY well. They said that he is trying really hard to please. Mendocino County Humane Society for Inland Mendocino County Redwood Valley (707) 485-0123	2-3 year old female German Shepherd who had been found running loose on the 101 freeway around Garberville. She is very affectionate but frantic to get out of the kennel situation. She has not a mean bone in her body as they say, and can't believe she's lost her family. Spayed and she is current on all shots

He was living a life of starvation and abuse. When he was rescued we thought he was brown until he had a bath. The bath revealed a beautiful snow white dog with faint tan freckles on his ears. He is a very loving dog and is also super smart. He learns easily and is very willing. He is housetrained and rides well in the car. He does however like to chase cats, but is good with them in the house. He would make a wonderful companion. He deserves a chance at a new life. Woofie is a mix.
Mendocino County Willits, The Milo Foundation milo@pacific.net, (707) 459-4900	Very sweet mama Shepherd dog rescued along with her puppies from the Contra Costa Animal Shelter in Martinez. She is housetrained, affectionate and good with most other dogs - great with people, she is very loyal and loving. Physically she is very tall, long bodied, angular and pointy - including her big ears! And now she is working on gaining weight and recovering from motherhood. Cybel walks well on a leash and loves to romp as much as she loves to snuggle, get pets and hang out. UPDATE: Cybel is done raising her puppies - and we ran her heartworm test and found out she is positive. This will not adversly effect the pups (they are started on Heartgard and the microfilaria will not develop into the second stage without the mosquito as vector . . . ) We have put her on the Special Needs List only as a temporary status due to needing heartworm treatment and recovery time. DONATIONS and a FOSTER HOME NEEDED!

At our best guess Garrison is around 1 years old, he sits when asked, walks on a leash, appears to be loving, playful, loyal, smart, obedient, easy going, affectionate, alert and friendly We feel Garrison may make a pretty wonderful bestfriend, he may even love to be your walking buddy, and a part of his new family. If you wish, Garrison can be tested around dogs and cats at the shelter.

Macy's high level of energy and her herding instincts mean that her home should have no other pets and only children over 12 years old. She is medium-sized for a GSD, about 68 pounds. She is sweet, patient, loyal and affectionate. She has low to moderate energy, enjoying walks and car-rides. She loves going with you on all of your errands, and is very well-behaved in the car. She would be very happy if she could go to work with you every day, but will also wait patiently for you to come home. She enjoys nothing more than hanging out with her person or people, wherever they are. Because of her age, she should be allowed to sleep indoors. She never chews on inappropriate items. She wants to make friends with every person she meets, but never jumps up on people. She does get excited and barks when she sees other dogs, but gets along well with calm, friendly dogs after a proper introduction - especially males. Sasha is good with older children, but may be too large for smaller children; her wagging tail could knock a toddler right over. NOT GOOD WITH CATS!! She is heartworm-negative, current on her heartworm medication and all vaccines. If you don't want all that puppy energy, and are looking for a mature dog to be your wonderful friend and companion, please consider giving Sasha a home. Rosie is house/crate trained and walks on leash. She is good with other dogs but has a dominant personality and should be the dominant dog if placed in a 2 dog household. Rosie is very affectionate and really wants to please. She likes to play in water and appreciates having a wading pool.

Sonoma County Wing and A Prayer Rescue Sebastopol 707-874-1312, email: stewball2@prodigy.net	Logan is a handsome 4-6 yo bicolored German Shepherd Dog who was to have been scheduled for euthanization due to misdiagnosed hip dysplasia. Rescue paid for X-rays showing one hip to be fair to good, the other good to excellent. Syptoms were due to a severe inner ear infection! His ear infection has cleared up (although he's not crazy about having his ears checked) and he is now ready to go to the loving home that he deserves. He's microchipped, heartworm negative and presently on preventative and is UTD on all vaccinations. Although he was not housebroken I believe we've passed that hurdle and he's learning some basic obedience but would definitely benefit from obedience training. Gets along with cats and other dogs.
