Lower Starr's Plain Cemetery

One of two cemeteries in the Starr's Plain section of Danbury, located just off of Route 7, about 1.5 miles south of I-84, on Starr's Plain Road. The cemetery near the south end of Starr's Plain Road, and is partially hidden from view by overgrown brush. The general condition is abysmal, with dozens of toppled, broken and buried stones. A heavy overgrowth of brush makes walking through the cemetery difficult. There is no evidence of any type of upkeep for many years. Sadly, this cemetery, one of Danbury's oldest, is the resting place of several defenders of Danbury during the 1777 British raid on the town. Also, as with any cemetery that reaches back to the Revolutionary War era, there are quite a few fieldstones present.

There are 181 gravesites that have been identified. In this transcription, the following codes have been used in the last column:

• I = The stone inscription is not legible to the naked eye. Inscriptions were verified using one of several enhancing techniques.
• M = The stone existed in 1934, at the time of the Hale Collection readings, but cannot be located at this time.
• B = The stone is broken into two or more fragments. All fragments may not be present in the cemetery.
• T = The stone has toppled over and is lying on the ground. It may or may not be in multiple fragments.
