NOTE: Formal transcription of this cemetery has not formally begun, and will take many months to complete. There are an estimated 45-50 thousand headstones in this cemetery. Because of the size, Wooster Cemetery will be published by Section, as each is completed. In the interim, as the Hale Collection database of each Section is added, it will be listed.
The Wooster Cemetery is the largest in Danbury, covering over 100 acres. The main entrance is on Ellsworth Avenue, just down the hill from the Danbury Hospital. It was established in the older manner of shady groves of trees divided by unpaved roads and trails. It is a very pleasant cemetery to visit. As with any cemetery of this enormous size, the overall condition of gravestones varies the entire spectrum, from broken or illegible, to the most modern granite or marble fixtures. In this cemetery, one may find a wide variety of monuments (both in size and style) as well as a very good sampling of gravestone art and symbolism. The grounds are very well kept, and the staff are usually quite helpful.
