Notification of Specification Change for ASTM E-18-05
With the release of the new ASTM E-18-05, the standard now states that steel
balls will be replaced by carbide balls. This affects all Rockwell Scales
utilizing the 1/16”, 1/8”, 1/4”, and 1/2” ball indenter. It is highly
recommended to obtain a copy from ASTM of the new specification (note 2) for
clarification of the change.
As of March 1, 2005, all Rockwell Hardness Standards and Machine Calibrations
will be performed according to the new specification. However, Hardness
Standards and Machine Calibrations performed with the steel ball will still be
available upon request only.
