CONFRONTING DACHAU
![]() |
Many people have written about visits to the sites
of former Nazi concentration camps. These accounts are frequently by
people who have an intimate, personal connection -- either as survivor, child
of a survivor, liberator or the like -- and are generally dramatic, highly
emotional narratives. Also, they tend to be a bit distant. The
intense connection of the author with this dreadful subject makes it more
difficult for the average reader to identify, to accept the experience as
if it were his/her own.
The following account is by someone who, except for being Jewish, has no direct connection with the Holocaust or with any of the camps. Other Jews who visit one of the sites are likely to have similar reactions to those described here.
