Roy Johnson and Bill Minick 1949

PlankOwner Roy Johnson remembers the birth of Thunder and pays tribute to the Newport News Troubadour, Bill Minick. Bill was beloved by all the Shipmates he served with, as well as those of us who met him and heard his music at many ship reunions.

Rags Ragland, 1952-58

Another beloved Shipmate was Franklin Delano "Rags" Ragland. Rags was chairman of many ship's reunions where he excelled at organizing some wonderful trips down memory lane. Rags is remembered and sorely missed by all his Shipmates.

ThunderStorm 1961

Jim Sollee (NN 1960-64) Remembers the worst storm Thunder went through during her 26 year history. Only a BM could present this Sea Story as it should be told. AttaBoy, Boats.

Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962

This Video Clip, narrated by Dexter Goad (NN 1961-64), shows Thunder's participation during a period of history that brought the country to the brink of World War Three.

Counter Battery, 1967

This running gun battle with the N Viets is described by Captain McCarty and audio from a Huntley-Brinkly News report. The audio is edited in by Dexter Goad with some excellent movie film taken by Lt Bruce Yarborough of Radm Kinney's staff.

Music Video NAM, 1967

Driving home one night, I heard the 1954 song Thunder Road by Robert Mitchum. With apologies to the late Mr. Mitchum (and my Shipmates), I wrote and recorded this version in about 5 minutes. Editing the clip took almost 4 hours. (Dex 11/17/05)

Turret Two Tragedy, 1972

Chuck Zendner introduces news clips of Thunder's darkest moment. Those who were there will have trouble watching this, and we understand. But we must never forget Those Who made the Supreme Sacrifice for our Country.

The Lone Sailor, May, 2002

Rags and Chuck unviel a plaque dedicated to our T2 Fallen Shipmates. This plaque is located with others and the Lone Sailor statue at Wisconsin Square in Downtown Norfolk. Original VHS tape had some interference lines, but overall good coverage of event.

'72 Shipmates Mike Treece and Jim Lawler participate in a ceremony held by Turret Two after the Working Party. Chuck Zendner (NN 72-73) Emcees as Rich Jordan, wounded in the turret explosion, tosses a wreath to Honor our 20 Heroes.

Every Day is
Veterans Day

Country-Music Singer, Red Johnson, loans his popular song to be edited with video out-takes from the ceremonies above. His song is very appropriate for this occasion. Red is a Patriotic American and we thank him for the use of his song and for his support of All our Military Personnel.

On June 28, 2003, over 125 Thunder Shipmates Manned the Rails aboard the USS Salem. This event Honored the arrival of our Fallen Shipmates' Family Members, Former Skippers, and other VIPs.

Commanding Officers McCarty (NN '66-68) and Snyder (NN '68-69) are piped aboard the USS Salem which, for us, was Thunder for a day of reunion and ceremonies. And they say you can't go home again. Some excellent camera work by Jim Sollee and Ralph Mulero.

Captain Lindsay McCarty addresses the crew as he did so many years ago on the GunLine in NAM. There is a lot of background noise, but if you listen closely, you can hear him clearly remind us of how great it was to serve on the best ship in the US Navy with "Such a Wonderful Crew".
