What can I say? There have been Dave Wild Trios in various cities over the years (there may even be one on CD one of these days); this one is among the best. Usually we feature Dave on piano, with Jeff Horton on bass and Charles Burleson on drums, and lately (in the Plus size), saxophonist Tim Doherty. This is contemporary accoustic jazz (even though half the time its my old electrified Yamaha PF80 on stage), in the tradition of Coltrane, mid-sixties Miles Davis, Bill Evans, and lots of others. Some jazz standards mixed with a good dose of original material.
.... For more info on the trio, visit the Dave Wild Trio home page.3RD COAST is Waco's premier contemporary jazz group (what we used to call fusion in the old days), under the able leadership of saxophonist Greg Bashara, aided and abetted by longtime members Clark Nauert on guitar and Jim Kumahata on bass, along with keyboardist Tim Gilpin and drummer Terry Bell. 3RD Coast played at the Woodway Arboretum on 6/16/99 (preserved in a photo at Live at the Arb) and more recently at the Brazos River Stage at MCC in Fall 2004.
McClennan Community College boasts a number of excellent jazz musicians in its music department. Although trumpeter Dave Hibbard moved off to Chicago a couple of years back, you can expect to hear Kenny Frazier, Dick Gimble, John Kutz, (dr) and others in faculty ensemble performances throughout the year. Details as they become available.
OTHER SOUNDS
Central Texas has two good jazz orchestras, those rehearsal groups we used to call "kicks bands" when I was little. The Waco Jazz Orchestra directed by trumpeter Tim Cates, features a number of fine local musicians.
In Temple the Temple Jazz Orchestra makes good noises once a week (fall and winter semesters), under the skilled leadership of Tom Fairlie. TJO performances from a fall 1998 concert at Midway High School's Performing Arts Center aired on PBS's 'Texas Music Cafe' throughout the year, and the fall 1999 concert was recorded for release at the Temple Jazz Festival in March 2000. TJO has a web page:Temple Jazz Orchestra.
I'd be happy to include information about any other jazz events which I've missed. Please send me a note at the mailing address at the top of the page above if you belong on this page.
The Elephant Room 315 Congress, Austin (512) 473-2279. Way out-of-town, but jazz every night. They have a web page: Elephant Room
