Read what Bernice Chesler said in her book "BED & BREAKFAST IN NEW ENGLAND":"This style of country living was lauded by Gourmet magazine. American and English antiques
are in a Colonial settingno clutter!created and re-created by Chapin, a skilled woodworker who was a Connecticut life insurance executive until 1980. To the 165-year-old farmhouse he has built an addition, "one that still allows us to stay small so that we can continue to provide surprises for our guests." Candle lights are in every window. Hardware is fashioned by son Jeff, a blacksmith. Another son, Eric, created detailed handcrafted wooden items. Dried flower wreaths, hand-painted wood and tin items, even thimbles are examples of Joan's artistry."~Bernice Chesler
Breakfast, cooked by Chapin Darling himself, is served from 8AM to 10AM and features Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice; Bacon, Ham, and Sausage; Any Style Eggs, Omelets; Home Fries; French Toast or Berry Pancakes & Cloth Napkins. Service by Candlelight.Rooms include five second-floor rooms, all private full baths. Canopied queen bed, twin beds, and double beds (one canopied) are available. All guestrooms have mountain views. They feature locally-crafted quilts and wide floorboards in a simple elegance of Colonial times. Two housekeeping cottages where children of any age and pets are welcome.
The comfortable Common Rooms include a quiet, fireplaced living room and a library with woodstove. Joan's dried flower arrangements, wreaths, and hand-painted items are evident throughout, as are Chapin's architectural, cabinetry and woodworking efforts. Antiques are everywhere.
Chapin has been known to lead guests in impromptu sing-a-longs with his acoustic guitar while guests join in on the "gut-bucket". Great conversation around the fire or total privacy.
Joan's and Chapin's interests complement their inn. She paints on antique wood and tin while he creates miniature and sophisticated wood items
