Click on this link to the "Documents" page where you will find important documents including the current ad on the CCC Job Bank inviting applications for adjunct faculty in "all disciplines" and a memo dated August 30 having to do with COC course cancellations as part of the administration's "Enrollment Management" program.  This tactic for redirecting students into courses that have greater numbers as a way of saving money is already taking its toll on educational opportunities for students and part-time faculty employment.

July 14, 2003:
COC part-timers want and deserve our own part-time faculty union NOW!

The decision of the State Public Employment Relations Board was soundly argued and written.  PERB's final ruling is fair.  Unfortunately, the district, led by Superintendant- President Diane Van Hook and the Board of Trustees, are using the PUBLIC'S MONEY to appeal PERB's ruling to the State Court of Appeals in an effort to put off our democratic rights, and force us into the college's CTA company union.

The district's actions are a gross betrayal of the public's trust - in this time of budget crisis in the state, why do they continue to waste the taxpayer's money in frivolous legal expenditures?

The Van Hook Appeal of the PERB decision is misguided and wrong, but it is not too late to withdraw it.  COC Part-time Faculty United/AFT therefore requests that the SCCCD Board of Trustees withdraw this appeal in the spirit of fairness, American democracy, and the public's trust with which they are charged.  The Board of Trustees can still correct their error and restore the respect that the district and the college so richly deserve by their good works. We say, don't let a single, but significant, bad decision undermine the reputation that years of good deeds have earned our college.

See the President's Message for additional thoughts and perspectives on this most significant development and our hopes for a speedy resolution that will allow us to finally have an election.

DECISION OF THE
PUBLIC EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS BOARD

Our organizing effort is building and once we get an election, we will finally be able to choose union representation - PART-TIME FACULTY WORKING FOR PART-TIME FACULTY - to make effective changes for the benefit of adjuncts at College of the Canyons.

In addition to moving forward in our organizing effort, Part-Time Faculty United-AFT will hold regular meetings and part-time faculty get-togethers begining this summer.  One of the many positive aspects of our organizing campaign has been getting to meet and network with other adjunct faculty members. The overwhelming positive response from our colleagues not only has ensured our ability to file for  and recieve recognition and thereby gain an election soon, but it has provided a means for regular communication and solidarity.  Together we have sown the seeds for a powerful organization to acheive part-time faculty rights at College of the Canyons!

We continue to face an uphill fight as we organize in SOLIDARITY for our right to self-determination.                                                         JOIN US!

Why a Part-Time Faculty Union?

WHY CHOOSE AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS/ AFT?

What Does Signing the AFT/CFT Authorization Card Mean?

The fundamentalAMERICAN right
TO CHOOSE had temporarily been removed by an absolutist, short-sighted, and self-serving
Santa Clarita Community College District administration, claiming that it was a "done deal," but fortunately that right has been properly restored.  Now we will be able to choose representatives who will best serve our interests as American professionals.

College of the Canyons PART-TIME FACULTY UNITED
nominate for the representation of COC Part-time faculty,
the
AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS - AFT.

Now that we are going to have a vote, let's elect FAIR and HONEST representation - AFT!
