It is the hope of Part-Time Faculty United-AFT that a fair and accurate description of these events may be had, while noting our decidedly pro-AFT perspectives.  The CTA-affiliated College of the Canyons (Full-Time) Faculty Association (COCFA) consistently refused for more that two decades to represent us, and decided to induct us ONLY when we attempted to organize independently as a means to negotiate the receipt of money granted to PART-TIME faculty from the state.

This "archive" is a developing project, aimed at providing the reader with accurate information documenting the obstructionist tactics and unfairness of the COCFA and COC Administration.  Additional documents and information will be added regularly.

BACKGROUND:

SINCE the END of LAST YEAR, the COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS ADMINISTRATION and its FULL-TIME FACULTY ASSOCIATION (COCFA) have FALSELY INSISTED that THEY WERE STRICTLY FOLLOWING THE PUBLIC EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS BOARD (PERB)'S DIRECTIONS in SUBSUMING the COC PART-TIME FACULTY into the RANKS of the COCFA.*  WHEN PART-TIME FACULTY OBJECTED, THEY WERE TOLD by LEA TEMPLER, the COCFA PRESIDENT, THAT it was TOO LATE TO CHANGE the COCFA DECISION, and that it had BECOME a "DONE DEAL."  WITH the HELP OF THE AMERICAN/ CALIFORNIA FEDERATION of TEACHERS (AFT/CFT), PART-TIME FACULTY-AFT TOOK THEIR COMPLAINT TO THE PERB.

The College of the Canyons administration and the CTA/ NEA continue to work to keep us from organizing even though we have received majority support from our adjunct colleagues!  WE LOOK FORWARD TO AN ELECTION IN THE FALL.  The district and the CTA/ NEA do not want that to happen and are doing everything that they can to prevent it.  Despite their efforts to undermine our organizing campaign, the COC administration and its CTA/ NEA affiliated full-time faculty association (COCFA) are attempting to depict themselves as friendly to part-time faculty members.

As part-time faculty members, we question the sincerity of the COCFA/ CTA/ NEA that refused our membership in their organization for over twenty years until the state equity money came down to the district.  If as they insist, truly in favor of adjunct faculty, then they would STAND ASIDE AND LET US HAVE AN ELECTION!

Santa Clarita Community College District and CTA, Get Out of the Way!

* Seeing an oportunity in the way COC subsumed the P-T Faculty into the COCFA, Victor Valley Community College and its CTA-affiliated full-time faculty (VVCFA) organization did the same - thus, our case hold greater meaning for the future freedom of ALL PART-TIME FACULTY to organize!
