CORRESPONDENCE

5/27/2009

Another addition to the Opry.  I believe that Montgomery Gentry will be great new members, because I believe they will make appearances as they should.  This helps keep The Grand Ole Opry alive.  As long as the new members make more than one or two appearances a year, and realize what the circle in the middle of the stage signifies, there is a chance that the Opry can survive, but it will take the artists to give her a chance to breath again.  Congrats to MG.

My name is Bill Pimentel and I have just joined.  I am interested in finding other musicians to play with.  I sing and play fingerstyle guitar and have performed solo all around New England.  I have been out of things for awhile but have still got most of my chops.  If you can help me find some people to play with,  that  would be great.  I would be glad to audition for anyone.

A big Thank-you to all the RICMA members that voted for me to win  "Bass Guitar of the year award".  I really enjoy playing for RICMA functions, and the folks that attend them.  I would also like to thank the bands that hire me. (A special thanks to the Bass players)  Whenever they take time off I get a chance to fill-in for them.   Sincerely,  Elaine Ellis

Open Letter to All CMA of RI Members  I just wanted to take a few column inches to thank the CMA of RI and all those who selected me to be the Rhythm Guitarist, Male Vocalist and Male Entertainer of the year. There are so many talented people playing country music in our little state (Just look at all the nominees on this years ballot)  It means an awful lot to know what I do has touched you enough to remember me when it comes time to vote.  And, I want you to know the only reason I missed the award ceremony and the opportunity to accept these awards was because I had obligations to my band members to honor a gig we had on the books. I know it sounds corny, but I don't do what I do to win awards.  I do it because I absolutely love the music and the people who love it too.  Country music people are the salt of the earth in my mind's eye and to have you pick me for these awards means more than you know. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Bill Friday

Steel Guitar News by Manny  Escobar

I must love playing steel. On March 21, 2009, Rhode Island Steel Guitar Association members Ron Cote, Ben Carnevale, Mark Rodrigues, Frank Goulart, Elaine Ellis and Yours truly; plus New England Steel Guitar member Vinny Doyle, played  for a "Veterans Helping Veterans" concert in front of the Webster Bank on Warwick Ave., in Warwick, R.I. We played OUTDOORS in the cold. Elaine Ellis, on bass and drum machine, and Ron Cote on guitar provided back-up. I was dressed for the North Pole. We set up on the grass at the edge of the highway, and drew lots of attention from the passing motorists, who probably thought we were insane.      Congratulations are in order for RISGA member Roger Trahan, for winning R.I. CMA Steel Guitar Player of the Year on April 5, 2009 at the Post 15 American Legion in E. Greenwich, R.I. The other two people nominated in this category were Tony Palmer and Yours truly. As Marcia Rodrigues stated on the internet Steel Guitar Forum, "It was long overdue for Roger".  On that day RISGA member Elaine Ellis won her first Bass Player of the Year in R.I.  She won her first Bass Player of the Year in Mass. in 2008. (not bad for a first timer).      Some people say that playing  pedal steel is a form of insanity. I think that it could be true. Not only did I play outside in the cold on March 21, but on April 11,2009, Elaine Ellis and I will have traveled to Kannapolis, North  Carolina to play there with local  steel players. We will also get to hear a couple of celebrity players like Herby Wallace and Tommy Dodd. The show is from 10am-11pm. (thirteen hours), at the Moose Lodge in Kannapolis. Because Elaine is going with me, we can question her sanity as well.      In other news,  RISGA will hold its quarterly meeting on May 17, 2009 at the Common Fence Community House in Ports. R.I. from 1-?  I am sure that discussion about the big RISGA show on Oct. 11, 2009 will be included in the meeting.  Also our circle jams are growing with enthusiasm. For more RISGA information call President Marcia Rodrigues at 401-625-5783 or Manny Escobar at 401-683-4365.
